Diagnostics software won't connect

Now all the mechanical mods are fine, I finally got around to loading the simple software program onto my laptop & sorting the connections etc but still no joy. Just says 'not connected' even with help of our local computer expert who's pretty good! It does come up with different error message if you physically disconnect it, which we reckon proves the connection is ok.

Anyone help?

The laptop's running WinXP; I know the program was designed for Win '98 but apparently should work with the right 9pin-to-USB converter program to slow speed down which we've added.

It is likely be:-

edit IGNITION ON & IMMOBILISER OFF!

1.your USB converter driver not installed or incorrect one
2.assignment of USB port- needs to be com1 or com2- also check by F10 key when in diags set com port and buad rate to 9600 helps

What lead are you using? You cant just use a standard Serial lead, you need to change the pinouts at one end.

1. was allegedly the right driver, came in a pack with the converter ... but remains area of doubt perhaps

2. Yes our computer guy checked that out - with help of your manual thanks! - we changed port it had allocated to Com 1 instead.



and the lead is the apparently correct one from Raceproved, then run through the converter as above...

For info for anyone else, Mark Adams just kindly called me back, and said that I'd end up with a box of malfunctioning converters like he has!

He recommends a PCMCIA card with a 9-pin plug, and must be the quality type not a cheap one, which has got the diagnostics program working reliably with every variety of operating system for him (except DOS)

Install drivers, configure to use COM1 or 2 (after install mine was configured on COM3), make up a serial to 3 pin connector and plug in to 3 pin connector. If it doesn't work first time swap the TxD and RxD connections on pins 2 & 3.

Mine also set to Com 3 but we changed that, I'll now try swapping the pin connections.

Maplin one ok for me too.

Just done the complete install on a new notebook & up & running within 5mins
Used prolific driver .exe & allocted default to com3 then swapped to com1 then ok

Just a thought
there is a second plug hanging around on later looms that is dead!

Before I did anything else, I just realised that the slightly misleading 'ECU not connected' message might suggest I had to actually start the car not just switch the ignition on... now working fine.




I can now learn about all the settings from your manual Graham!
