The things you do when your drunk !

Having not been on a bike for a good 15 years somehow the alcohol took over and I'm now doing the C2C cycle ride on the 11 September with three of my mates. None of whom are in a better condition than me.
We are already into the first reserve as Ivan encountered certain difficulties on the first training run and but has now had his heart opperation !

Its 148 miles or thereabouts but its the hills that will be the biggest problem. The route climbs about 8890 feet. It will be at some point when I'm struggeling up one of those hills that I'm sure I will renounce alcohol for ever.

Anyway to the point. I need some dosh

We are doing it for two charities and I have opend two pages on the just giving website cos you can't have two charities on one page. The links are below.

If your feeling at all benevolent, have some spare cash or like the idea of paying to see me suffer please give what you can.

Thanks

Days it might take me weeks !

Not finally decided yet and have some flexibility as far as accomodation is concerned. But looking at 2 days at best 4 at worst. We'll make a decision nearer the start date when we can evaluate just how unfit we all are. I think it will be three.

If that was an offer to be our pace setter then thats very kind but I think we'll be too busy concentrating on breathing to be worried about pace.

You might be right
Having been out last night I could hardly walk this morning but that pales into insignifcance compared to the pain in my bum

You'll be ok you just need to get into training, and make sure your bike fits you (everywhere) I did this www.caminodesantiago.me.uk by bike a couple of years ago plus half of France, we did 100 miles a day.

Tweaking the bike is the key. The changes I have made so far have made a remarkable difference. Getting some clip less peddles this weekend as well. so that should make life easier once I stop falling off

I use Crank Brothers pedals and Sidi shoes, you should always be clipped in, it just takes some getting used to, you will be in much better control of the bike.

For bike bits try http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ I use them, they are very competitive and the stuff always arrives the next day.

if you want to borrow a bike i have a full carbon team tcr giant full aero kit including wheels as long as your not over 6ft you will fit fine.i was sponsored and raced for many years as a cat 1 rider and trained the junior centre of excellence team .if you need any tips on nutrition, set up etc give me a pm i would gladly help.it is a very short time to train for the event and would suggest 3 days at 50miles per day .your main gearing to start should not exceed a 43 inner front ring and a 15 rear sprocket.anything above this will cripple the muscle groups you will be using.in short take your time max out at 17mph and just twiddle the pedals .it is also important to eat and drink at regular intervals .if you are at the point were you have to eat then youve gone past the point of no return.always in your back pockets should be things like bannanas jelly babies etc to keep your levels stable

Eating has never been a problem for me but it is part of the problem at the moment. I invested in a heart rate monitor and have a traing plan on the polar online site which is based around cadence and heart rates. So far so good but I'm only in the first week. Flat bits I can cope with but the hills are something else. out tomorrow but next week is looking a bit tougher.

We live on a hill, not a big hill but a hill and every ride involves going up it at the begining or the end. Its getting a bit easier, i think.

Being somewhat on the heavy side I'm trying to loose weight, get fit and build up endurance all at once. Not ideal but I don't have a lot of time. Concentrating on the weight and endurance at the moment, trying to keep cadence between 80 and 100rpm and heart rate at less than 70% max. But for a sore bum and a bit of tightness in the front of the thigh its going ok.

I have a feeling next week is going to be a challenge.

Master plan is complete the ride and not end up in hospital. Better than one of the original team who ended up having heart surgery after the first training session.

Advice in the nutritional side would be most welcome. Does in invole a full english every morning?

think you are concentrating to much on the hill.to cimb hills at speed you need to be a whippet.i was fair on the hills but weight held me back.its all to do with fitness really.we can all bike up a hill but the biggest problem is how soon can you recover from it.when in race fitness maybe 30 seconds or beginers mode say 20mins.you really need to forget the hill and cover the distance instead ,as said keep the rpm going.do not train everyday.the bikers sessions are in racing season monday rest, tuesday 70miles,wednesday league roadrace 40ish miles.thursday up to 80miles,friday indoor trackwork,saturday/sunday stage road race up to 150miles
try to do 20 to 30 miles per day and twiddle the pedals and wkeep awy from pushing the big gears.twiddling improves the stamina and forms the basic muscle groups for biking.word of warning after the event if you jog or similar the cycle muscle groups will shorten hamstrings so gentle stretching to aviod problems.i will have a word with my nutritionist as severly changing a diet might be to much

lots of carbs and energy bars, the best bit about long disance riding is all the cakes and junk you can eat.

To all of you tts who said they would sponsor me and haven't get your fingers and credit cards out.The link is on this tread.

Bondy if I'm not here when the stone guards eventually arive you can have them foc. I have mentioned you specifically in my will on this point.
The rest of you also have a mention. But it may not be enouigh for an M600 each !

I hope this is au revoir rather than bye bye

You'll all be delighted to know that it didn't kill me. It just feels like I have been run over by a bus seveal times. Managed to do it in three days in the end but we did have Sunday off to play golf and have a few beers.

If I ever mention doing anything similar again you all have my premission to come round to my house and beat me around the head but a heavy blunt object.

Thanks to all those who sponsored me and for the text messages offering abuse and encouragement.
