subaru running costs ... just how bad?
Discussion
SWMBO has given the green light to buying a new car after our wedding (next september time) and we have decided on an impreza, currently a bugeye WRX seems to fit the bill.
Cost of buying the car fits nicely within our budget and now we have grown a little older/wiser the insurance isn't prohibative. However, I still have reservations about running an impreza and the potential damage to my wallet. Just how expensive a daily driver are they?
I know fuel consumption isn't great but I had a 306 GTi last year that due to a recurring fault was often ruturning miles per gallon in the low 20's so I should be used to that, what are the service intervals for the bugeye WRX? How much should we pay for servicing? Are there any other costs we should be aware of?

I ran an Impreza WRX PPP Blobeye for 2 years. Average fuel consumption was about 22mpg. I did around 8k a year and as well as a yearly dealer service also did an interim oil service myself. Only problem i had in that time was a leaky passenger side cam cover gasket (reasonably cheap fix). Did however get through a fair few sets of tyres 'RE050' 3 sets of 4 tyres.
Main costs will be insurance, petrol (ran mine on v power full time) and dealer servicing (which is slightly high).
Sold mine because of insurance costs and the fact that, because i only used the car for commuting, i couldn't utilise it's full capabilities.

I've had my blboeye STI for about 18 months now, The running costs are not that bad if you spread them over the year because of the bullet proof reliability. Servicing at 30000 miles, 4 new RE070 tyres and new front brake pads have been the only expenditure other than Vpower petrol insurance and VED. I reckon I'd have spent much more on a similarly powerful German car TBH. The servicing should be done every 10K or 1 year and a main dealer will probably charge in the region of 200 quid for a 10K sevice, 350 for a 30k service and 500 quid for the big cambelt service at 50K, you could get it cheaper from a decent indy sevicer. Mine does about 23 MPG if i don't hoon too much and as low as 8 MPG if i do hoon. I pay 640 quid a year fully comp with Privelege for insurance and the VED is over 400 quid a year now.

crikey you are thinking about what car you are going to get in 14 months time!
running costs not that bad considering what you get in terms of performance and handling.
oil changes at 5,000 miles and standard servicing at 10k intervals (or is it 12?). cambelt at 45k / 90k.
Plenty of good indi garages to do the work as sensible prices, plenty of places to order parts from at reasonable prices.

It all depends how much you use the BOOST i have a jap import wrx wagon with a few mods so around 300 brake usually i can get just over 80 miles out of £20 of super unleaded, this week i managed to keep off the boost more than usual so squeezed 94 miles out of it which is rare using the boost is so tempting even more so as i've not had the car that long

Ive just bought an immaculate blue 2001 WRX. Fuel economy is better than the classic one I had. I got 27.9mpg on a 360 mile journey (Had to top up of course)
Its difficult not to drive fast because they sound fantastic, and its addictive.
Skodas are good cars but 4WD and that flat 4 sound makes it my choice.

LOL yeah I know but I'm currently stuck in petrol head hell and driving a gutless 1.2 clio around, if I plan the next purchase it makes it seem like there is light at the end of the tunnel! I have been running a WRX for over 3 years and it isnt really that bad to be honest.
Dealer servicing is expensive. I was quoted £175 for the last service, oil and filter change, and £500 for the next, which is a big one.
But i went to an independant specialist that i trust and the oil service was £99 and the next will be £299 so not so bad.
Middle if the road performance tyres, Falkens, cost about £265 a set. Over 35k i am now on my 4th set of tyres, but i have had the geometry changed which will increase wear.
Sti discs and pads from a stealer are a crazy £1,550!!!!!
Aftermarket you can get a set of performance discs and pads for £350 and fitting is about £60, i am about to fit my 3rd set, but again its all on how you drive.
As most have already said, reliability is very good, but when parts do need replacing it can be costly if your not willing to shop around.
If you get an Octavia, good as they are, you will be sorry everytime a scoob passes you, and running wise, they wont really be worlds apart so you wont see much benefit for the loss in performance.
Hope this helps,
Ian
