My current lens kit is as follows:-

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS (older one, not the DO one)

Out of all of them, the only one I'm not 100% happy with is the 28-135, and consequently, despite its flexibility, it's almost always relegated to the 2nd body as a back-up lens (in case I need more length when using the Tamron, or more width when using the 70-300.

I could probably manage without it, but I have found it useful from time to time.

Photography is a mixture, and in order of # of photos taken is:-
- motorsport (inc. 'close-ups' and the odd portrait)
- holidays and weekends away (landscapes, towns, events, animals)
- friends and family

...oh, and we're going on safari in a few months, for which I'm expecting the 70-300 to be the default wildlife lens and the 17-50 a landscape back-up, unless someone has a bright idea...

So...without spending a fortune (<£500), what's out there that's noticeably better than the 28-135?!? Don't mind buying 2nd hand, but don't want to inherit someone else's problems...

IIRC, the Tamron 18-270mm VC scored very well, if not the best, in the Canon mag 'PhotoPlus' a while back.

Sigma's 24-70 F2.8 and Tamron's 28-75 F2.8 are supposed to be a good lens also. I suppose it depends on what focal range you want to replace it with.

I have the 28-135 myself and have been looking to swap it with the Canon 18-200 IS, Tam's 28-75 F2.8. Be interested in other comments here, myself, so thx for posting the Q.

Tam and Sig both do a 24-135 but I don't know anything about them (just found them whilst googling for this thread).

Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS is the perfect solution I'd have thought, but around £800 new... frown

+1 but didn't mention due to cost.

2nd hand, of course, may be within budget?

...which is the exact thought-process that's led me here. Because I can't find a 2nd hand one for love, money or sexual favours, it's totally out-of-budget as a new lens.

Don't get me wrong - I like my photography - but I couldn't justify THAT much on a lens, esp. not a walkabout lens, given that well-over half of my pics are motorsport or landscape...I'd be better off getting a 70-200L and/or a 10-22 instead...which has crossed my mind...

...but back to this particular problem - the 28-75's haven't got enough extra 'length' over the 17-50 to make them worthwhile. I guess what I probably need is:-
10-22
24/28-70/75
70-300 (or 70-200 +1.4TC)

...and ditch the 17-50 and 28-135 completely. Trouble is that's 2 new lenses and I've grown attached to the 17-50. If it breaks I might consider the above list...what do people think on that score?!?

Very unlikely you'll find a 24-70 f2.8 or 24-105 f4 second hand, and even if you do they'll be near new prices.

August last year you could buy a 24-105 f4 for £570 if you shopped around. Now they best you'll see is around the £900 mark.

I really wish I'd bought last summer!

Anyone know anything about this:-

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sigma-50-150mm...

A little over my budget, but affordable compared to the £800+ for a 24-105L. But is it worth the money - can't find any on-line reviews!

Thanks,

A mate has the 50-150f2/8 HSM in nikon fit.

He's dialed +17 into the D300 to fix the tele end focus and relay needs - something at the 50 end.

Saying that though its pin sharp and produces stunning pics, the mkII is supposed to focus better too. Not too common because of its wierd focal length and crop only (when compared with a classic 70-200). Its small and light, considering...

I'm thinking about the new 18-135IS 7D kit lens, tried it out in store, looked OK (but with CA) but not realy enough to say yes or no yet (or compare to the average 28-135).

Here is a review of the Canon one - focussing issues again. I also think it is a bit of an annoying in-between focal length.

I'm keeping an eye out for a walkaround lens replacement at some point. Interested in the sigma 17-70 but there is no OS or HSM. The new Canon 15-85 IS USM looks very interesting but might be expensive to start off with it - not sure when it goes on sale.

What's wrong with the 28-135 lense? I was thinking of purchasing one soon to replace the kit lense that came with my canon 400d. Either that or the 17-85 IS. Any suggestions? I also don't want to be spending thousands, just want something to keep on the camera from day to day.

Honestly there both pretty average. 17-85 is just a redesigned 28-135 scaled down and using the short back focus.

17-85 has utterly failed to impress me with everty opertunity and it was massivly expensive at launch and still not that cheap. The new IS kit lens slaughters it for IQ and at half the price.

yes

You need to be so careful how you drive it. Try it wide-open and it's soft. At wide-angle it gets soft. At full-zoom it's not great. And you get noticeable CA if you're not careful.

OK, a bit harsh perhaps, but I AM comparing it to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, which is an awesomely sharp piece of kit (but sadly built like a cheap MFI flat-pack rather than an antique solid-oak dresser...) and the Canon just doesn't cut it, not for the money...

Anyway, have decided for now to stick with the current kit, and decide whether to save up for a nice mid-ranging L-series lens or sell the Tamron and get a longer walkabout and a nice 10-22/24 for the landscapes.

What sort of focal-length / tasks?

There's a couple of med-wide Sigma zooms with good reputations, one of which does macro too (nearly bought it instead of the Tamron) - will try and dig out the names tomorrow.

Otherwise check out DP Review and FredMiranda - both have a variety of lens reviews...

That would be my question too...

Also, if you know anyone who lives in Northern Spain/South Western France...Andorra can be a useful place to visit for camera kit.
