off to America & Japan shortly so I'm going to pick up some equipment for myself (Canon) definitely a decent Macro lens + a good wide angle, some extension tubes, tri-po, remote.

any thoughts on what else would be good for a starter?

Is America the best place to buy in, is the Canon America warranty world wide now?

what would you get?

does anyone want something bought back?

My Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro lens is without doubt my favourite, although it really does require a ring flash to make the most of it. If I was told I could only take one lens somewhere, I think this would actually be the one I'd choose most often.

As for the wide angle, what sort of body have you got? If it's not a full sensor body, then pretty much every review I could find when I went looking rated the Sigma 10-20mm way above the Canon EF-S 10-22mm, and it was over £100 cheaper too.

I can recommend the Sigma 105mm for macro. It seems very good to me and most reviews that I've seen say it's equal to the Canon. The only criticism I have is that the autofocus is very poor, so if you want to use it for non macro something else would be better.

I disagree that you need a ringflash though; I've seen excellent results with the Sigma and with other lenses using a normal flash on a bracket. I do this as well and don't have any complaints.
