why has my odd bank coil pack just overheated and started smoking within 30 seconds of switching on the ignition?

If youve had the coils out make sure youve not trapped the wires to the coil and earthed the coil driver wires out .. the symptom you have suggests the coils being powered constantly which would suggest a short circuit to earth ..

all, thanks. BCA i may well have to take you up on that tomorrow. I rang the organisers at lunchtime and withdrew - then had to move the car to get a kids bike out a few minutes ago and guess what the bloody thing worked perfectly!

Thats TVR for you so i am back in the event but with an intermittent problem god only knows
