Hello All,

First post in this section of the forum, I am after a daily watch to stand in for an old Seiko Kinetic on occasion.

My requirements are as follows:

- Must have day/date function
- Automatic movement
- Steel bracelet
- Must feel substantial, but not an oversize case
- Budget under £1K

I have been looking on the web and came across this for £780 at Jura Watches

Any opinions or alternatives?

I have an Oris in a similar-ish style to that one. They are very solid, and the bracelet is excellent.

I only paid £200 for mine second hand, and there seems to be a pretty regular flow of them through the TZ-UK Sales Corner.

I think Goldsmiths sell them, so you could check out the quality etc there.

Just look for that watch from another retailer as jura are way overpriced!

When i bought my Ball it was £400 more at jura than Leslie Davis.

I think that Oris punches well above its weight. I've never heard a bad word said about them. My dress watch is an Oris Miles Tonneau that I bought abroad about 5 years ago (I've never seen the model in the UK at all) and I love it.

Try austinkaye.co.uk too as they have both new and used Oris models.

What he said. Great traditional mid-tier watch maker.

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like trying to find one at Goldsmiths and see what can be done on price.

I have that exact watch, was bought for £685 when my Rolex Sub went in for a (3-4 month)service in May. Has £1500 to spend but didnt believe the Tag Carrera was any better when I looked closely at them both.

Odd thing is that now my sub has come back I havent been wearing it as I prefer the oris.

Have a look at their BC3 model, also very attractive and minimalist and meets your criteria. It comes in two sizes (I think the larger is better) and with a choice of rubber or bracelet.

I like that, more than I like lots of watches that cost considerably more.

The big shame with Oris is that they often don't lend themselves to fitting alternative strap, pus mine isn't a great timekeeper (dunno if that's just bad luck or not).

Wouldnt hesitate to reccomend them, could easily and possibly will do spend much more ;-)

I've got a Williams F1 Oris with the rubber strap and I wear it more often than my other watches. It looks great with a nice clear design, feels special and is supremely comfortable. I highly regard Oris' and often recommend them, even persuading a few family members to get them over other makes. My next good watch will be the rose gold plated Oris TT3 as it is deffinately my current favourite watch.

I think I got my Oris brand new for around the £300 mark or less. Can't recall the website I'm afraid but IIRC I saved about £200-£250 on RRP.

Oris are hard to beat for the quality you get per £. My first two watches are Oris and I've had no problems whatsoever.

I bought both of mine from an AD in Australia who sells online (http://www.friendsoforis.com/store/) - beat any other price I could get by a longgg way (although that was when the £ was stronger). Still worth a look perhaps.

I am still waiting to get my hands on one of these, so I can see it in the flesh. I am off to Dublin next week and there are a few jewellers I know which stock a good range of Oris watches.

As it happens I was in Mallorca for the last 2 weeks, looked everywhere for Oris but could not find any, I did however come across a nice Hamilton Khaki Aviator at half price, even with the poor Euro it made it a good buy.
