Steve Heath has over 500 BHP and last I heard was aiming for 600.

The Jag diff is immensely strong, it's the rest of the car you need to be worried about. smile

There are higher ratios available on the Jag diff (higher than 3:1), so why bother ?

Make the engine rev a bit higher, and standard 3.54:1 should pull over 162 in 5th at 6,500rpm with enough power.

Also you could fit larger rolling radius rear wheels. smile

I remember when I had my second Lotus 7, I had 2 sets of rear wheels for changing the gearing in this way.

Well that's pretty good then...nice and high, if you have the power to pull it. Most Wedges are supposed to be 3.54

Lol!

Now that's more like it. biggrin

Did you do much chassis modding ?

You might consider upgrading to A-frame type rear end, and driveshafts from a 390/400SE, with the bigger UJs. scratchchin

Really, 'shpub' is the guy to advise you though, as I know he's tried everything at one time or another, as regards handling big power in a Wedge.smile

3.08 is more like it as that's the TR8/rover ratio. There's also 3.45, 3.9 and 2.84 iirc. I have a 2.84" in my axle but am switching to an 8.8" with lower 'A' frame and upper trailing links.

Ooops, I assumed you were using a TR axle, sorry.

my owners manual says 3.07.... I would like to get to a 2.54 so I can hit 60mph in first. As far as frame mods, I did relocate 2 cross members and made up new engine mount locations. With all the parts there I could do the conversion in 8hrs (2 guys)

Hmm...it's a conversion I'd considered doing on a S1 FHC I owned before.

I know one of the American PH'ers put a Ford 302 into his 280.

If you do a bit of research into the Daimler/Jaguar XJ6 and Jag XJS models, I think you'll find that a 2+ ratio diff was offered, so what you're wanting is around somewhere. smile

I had a couple of XJs back in the seventies.

It would be great if you could do a little youtube vid of your car and the nice noise it must now make. biggrin

Here's mine:

(If it's not deafening, then you haven't got the sound turned up enough.hehe)

Well the Ford 302 is most likely me... I thought it was a 302 until I sorted out the plug wires to find that it was a 351. The fireing order is not the same.

Hmm...maybe there are two then, as the guy was posting back in 2004 and gave details as to how he did the conversion. Did you buy it from him ?

351 instead of 302 eh...nice surprise. hehe

What gearbox you going to use, as the LT77 with not cope with 400BHP.
As a change in gearbox will also change your gear ratio's also.

It's mainly torque that kills gearboxes not power, and my LT77 hasn't broken yet despite some monster torque going through it. I don't know if Steve is still running an LT77 but he was doing for several years.

I'm assuming he has the matching Ford gearbox fitted.

Wasn't it the final drive the OP was asking about? smile

Yes he did ask about the final drive, but it's pointless looking totally at final drive without knowing the gearbox ratio's esp if he wants 60 in 1st.
