Hi, my younger brother is looking to apply for work experience before he starts university (he's applying to study Engineering, but his passion is cars...), in the London or London/Essex border area. Any ideas appreciated! smile

Sorry I don't know any specific companies in your eara but if your younger brothers passion really is cars he should know all the companies in your local area to target. If not a few evenings on the web should give him a good list of companies.

Once he has his list my advice would be to find out who is the top technical manager/owner of each company (can be easily found out with one telephone call)and the correct spelling of their name.

Your brother then could write a good covering letter with his CV attached (hopefully highlighting skills and experience that will benefit their business) explaining that he is looking for long term work experience ie over the next few summers during his university degree. Sounds much better than have you got a summer job before I go off to university. I would also advise to send it by post rather than an email, emails can be easily forgotten but a letter tends to remain a pyhsical object that remains seen days/weeks after being sent. Get him to include his email address as if he doesn't get a reply within a couple of weeks then he can send a follow-up email or better still a follow-up phone call.

If he is serious about getting into the automotive engineering industry then he should have no problem accepting relatively low wages to offset the advantage his work experience will give him when it comes to standing out from the hoards of other graduates that will be looking for a full time job when they finish their degrees at the same time as he finishes his.

When I was looking for work experience for my third year of my degree course I must have written at least a 100 letters to automotive companies in the UK. All it takes is one letter to land on the right persons desk at the right time for him to get a result. It worked for me and I have not looked back since! Like anything in life the more effort he puts in the luckier he will be in finding a really interesting work experience job.
