I just imported a 280i Convertible with N-Ireland registration plates still on it (import from UK to Belgium) smile

It's a SBZ plate, I've been told it's N-Ireland wink

There was (is?) a scam popular with the unscrupulous in the motor trade... they'd buy a crashed car in the UK, bodge the damage up and 'export' it to Northern Ireland where it'd then be re-registered with an NI plate.
Subsequently re-imported to the mainland, the car would be re-registered to a UK plate. In the process the insurance history would be lost, so there'd be no trace it was ever crashed...

I bought a water damaged 406 in NI in 2000. It had been written off in Great Yarmouth with the big storms/flooding. When I got it the carpets and seats were still wet from the steam cleaning!
Anyway, I registered it in NI, then on my return to the mainland (in 2002)I reregistered it with DVLA. The chassis number was good enough to link it with its previous registration number (I still have the plates in the garage!) I was given the choice of reverting back to the R plate or keeping it on the NI one. I kept the NI...
It was some time, years... before I could go into a motorfactors and quote the NI plate, always needed to quote the R plate for spares. I've still got the car and very recently went in for a Viton sender/sensor thing and quoted the old reg. No record.. NI reg, great!
It's a good scam one way... but should be avoidable if it returns to the Mainland.
