A PERTH motoring writer has been nabbed allegedly doing twice the speed limit in a rare Ferrari worth nearly $500,000.

Police have impounded the rare Ferrari California being driven by Financial Review motoring writer Rod Easdown.

The car was brought into Australia by Ateco Automotive and was scheduled for test drives with WA media outlets this week.

The car was allegedly caught speeding through the WA Wheatbelt at 231km/h.

The red Ferrari California is one of just two of its kind in Australia.

A police spokesman said the rare red sports car had been recorded travelling at more than twice the legal limit when spotted by police on Julimar Rd, near Toodyay, just before noon today.

Police have charged the 57-year-old male driver, from Wembley, with reckless driving. The car has been impounded under hoon legislation for seven days.

A police spokesman said: "The incident should serve to remind drivers that regardless of a car’s capabilities, excessive speed is a contributing factor in about 60 people dying on our roads each year."

A spokesman for Ateco, Mr Edward Rowe, refused to comment

hoon legislation? Surely something fishy there? Or are the Aussies really that amusing?

Wikipedia:

"Hoon is a derogatory term used in Australia and New Zealand to refer to a person who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviour. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily or dangerously. Hoon activities can include speeding, street racing, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tyres.[1] Those commonly identified as being involved in "hooning" or street racing are young, predominantly male although increasingly female drivers in the age range of 17 and 35 years.[2]"

That's good to know. It's so sad that the journalist testing the car died... Oh no wait he didn't. Hhhhhm so excessive speeding maybe doesn't kill.

Not actually amusing when you live with it...

I can lose my licence and my car for doing something as dangerous as 90MPH on the freeway, or spinning my wheels as I accelerate rolleyes

Meanwhile 95% of drivers seem to believe the doctrine that as long as they aren't speeding they are driving safely, while sitting in the RH lane at 20KPH below the limit, oblivious to anything going on around them.

I was going to rant on but can't be bothered... if you want a laugh at our expense there are plenty of threads in the Australia forum about the abysmal driving conditions here.
