great hotel with great restaurant - england/wales?
Discussion
Getting married in 4 weeks - we are just having a few days away in the UK (just had 2 weeks in greece with the kids). Looking for a hotel with great restaurant. Spa not necesary as the missus likes doing that with her mates, not me! Preferably not more than 3 hours from Birmingham as the kids will be with the in-laws and dont want to spend all out weekend driving. Budget £600 for couple of nights inc food. Ideas?
From personal experience:
The Grosvenor in Chester
The Summer Lodge In Dorset
Both are exceptionally agreeable, with excellent dining (the sommelier at the Summer Lodge WILL find a wine to suit you amongst the thousands in the cellar. How else would we discover that Uruguay produce world class wines?!).

I've stayed at Hipping Hall up in Kirkby Lonsdale and it was out of this world.
The food on the standard menu looked fantastic but we paid the bit extra and went for the tasting menu with the matched wines and it was certainly worth it!
The staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble, there are lovely surrounding villages too for something to do during the day.
Room 2 seems to be one of the nicest if you can get it.

The Moathouse at Acton Trussell is colossal. I adore it there and the restaurant is superb.
Or could you fly (East Midlands to Ronaldsway) to the Isle of Man and stay at The Sefton

That would at least treble, more likely quadruple the budget, as would Gidleigh Park, so that's out.Go to Yorkshire for better value, beautiful countryside, friendly people and great food. The Yorke Arms at Ramsgill has a Michelin * restaurant, fantastic surroundings and is utterly charming. The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is on a larger scale with another Michelin * restuarant, but otherwise ticks all the same boxes, although the rooms are a little chintzy. Further North, the Star Inn at Harome also has a * and is more quirky (and difficult to get into).
Seiont Manor Hotel, very nice and superb food.

What sort of food and what sort of location?
Alot of these so far have been in the countryside etc.
How about city centre?
Manchester?
The Midland?
The hotel is probabaly not as good as some mentioned in this thread, but the restaurant - The French - is very very special - the somelier (sp?) there is also very very talented.
Or alternativly choose a different hotel in the area but eat at The French?

Infact after typing all of that the hotel may not be special enough - but the restaurant certainly is.

Stayed there - highly recommended. Most of the handpicked hotels are great - sign up for their newsletter and they are currently doing Dinner B&B deals at most hotels.
The one nr Wetherby is good - Wood Hall?
castell deudraeth at portmeiron is a REALLY nice place to stay..... Highly recomend it, walk down to the seafront in the "village" for a nice meal....
Or if you cant handle the "disney-ness" of pormerion and prefer to be a little bit more cut off... http://www.lakevyrnwy.com/ Lake vrnwy hotel is a really nice place!
They have a helipad too if you fancied flying up there

Thanks for all the pointers everyone, quite a few were full. Went with handpicked hotels and rookery hall nr Nantwich/Chester in the end:

2 nights for £370 in an executive room with dinner, bed breakfast is pretty good. The wine list could bump that up tbh!
