To convert one of these to the equivilent of a yacht?

take it to asia and park it up and live in it and then when bored fly somewhere else.

Surely there is enough room for 2 and it would be able to take a RIB that can be stored in it?

Yachts are 10 a penny so why is there no market for something like this?

Not enough space or too expensive?

There was a Catalina that had been made into a sort of air yacht a while back. It had two extra engines added to it.

Here it is:

This was flying around in the 1990's as an executive transport. It's known as the Bird Innovator.

I know there were others. There was a book called "Bombing Twins" that used to have a bit more information on Cat's in civilian life.

That was how the last one that was flying managed to survive.

I think this is a great idea but to be honest times have moved on - in a positive way. Imagine a Catalina-type 'air yacht' made in modern, corrosion proof, composites for low maintenance. It could have hydraulically folding wings to get into harbours and use nice, reliable, turboprops that run on kerosene - often much easier to find than avgas.

I agree entirely, however I would still make it look like a Sunderland, with turrets and everything smile

Yes, so many great flying boats to choose from - I always fancied a Dornier DO 24 (or even a DO-X!)

You could just go for a boat and leave the plane bit to one side like this. Formerly Howard Hughes' own personal Boeing 307 Stratoliner. It's a lot safer smile

Only 10 model 307 Stratoliners were built, only one complete aircraft (a flier) exists along with this fuselage.

There always seem to be plenty of Grumman flying boats around for sale, Goose (Geese) and Albatross. But as with the Sunderland idea it needs to be a big one to make the room you need. smile

How about one of these? Shinmaywa US-1A, used by the Japanese Defence Force, first flew in 2003 so its pretty bang up to date.

Not too bad looking either

Not as big as a Catalina, but the Wilson/de Chevigny Explorer 1 made for a nice aerial camper...
