Loose gearbox linkage?

When testdriving a Griffith 430 I found the gearpositions so diffuse (but still tightly spaced) that I didn't dare trying any fast shifts.

Is it probable that this can be solved by replacing bushings (if there are any) or otherwise tightening up the gearbox linkage or is it likely to be a difference between the T5 equipped 500:s I've looked at before and the LT77 gearbox?

The Rover gearbox should be pretty smooth and fairly quick in operation. I have a 4.5 precat and the gearbox is a peach, in fact, nicer than the one in my previously owned 500 Griff.

There is a remote linkage on top of the gearbox, and a nylon bush where the gear lever connects to the linkage. Its a swine of a fiddly job to change the bush but it costs next to nothing.
I found when the nylon bush had split and bits dropped out on mine I could only just select gears - but I still made it home to Notts from Blackpool !
