We were at Rockingham on Saturday on a very wet track day testing different set ups for the Murtaya race car.
The constantly changing nature of wet/dry meant it was very greasy all day so did not get too much detailed data from the day but had some great fun while trying!
Lots of Caterham race cars there as well in both Academy and R300/400 specification.
Bit of incar video fun here;-

Top stuff! What sort of spec is that Murtaya? Gearbox seems pretty close, Type-RA bits? DCCD as well? Looks like great fun. smile

Car is standard STI V2 engine, std non-DCCD viscous centre diff gearbox and rear diff. SIMTEK ECU and FMIC are only changes from stock. Approx 280bhp and 280lb ft on Optimax.

This is the development competition Murtaya (the black one in the many show/publicity photographs).

The monocoque is identical to the road cars (which is massively over engineered), full roll cage, hard top bonded onto monocoque, and different spec on the dampers/springs. Other than that it is just a basic entry level Murtaya.

The car takes an absolute hammering and receives very little love in return. A week prior to Rockingham it was in a quarry doing gravel rally testing (identical spec bar springs/dampers/ride height) which was also brilliant fun.

Hoping to rebuild engine soon as it is now over 12 years old and getting a bit tired! Will be lovely when we unleash some power through it with a 6 speed box to put it down :-)

Cheers,
Neil.

I so very nearly bought one of these as I had a great donar car.
Went in another hillclimb direction due to estimated costs of the Murtaya.
Guess who ended-up spending more!

As a flyweight hillclimber these would be fab to say the least!

Neil, a question if I may? What have you done regarding the driver ergonomics - it looks very tight in there in the vid you posted and I'm guessing as the driver is a pro he's not exactly tall?

Neil:
Surprised you remember me, I must have talked you to death!

I ended up selling the Sti hillclimb car to a friend who has carried on modding etc the car to good effect.

I bought a Lola T492 rolling Sports Racer 1978 vintage, 480 Kg of it.
Being a Porsche type deep down (had my 911 hotrod for 21 years now) I thought I would drop a 3200cc 911 Flat 6 into the mid-engined rear.
Took a bit of doing and 10 months of slog, but hillclimbed it for the first time 3 weeks ago. Have some gearchange issues to sort, but rest is really good!
It nearly got a 2.1 litre Impreza with a converted to 2 wheel drive box...

Hi Graham,
Car looks great and I bet it is wonderful to experience from the hot seat.
Let me know where you are competing with it in the south west - would be very interested in trying to get to see it and meet up with you.

Packaging question - the original Murtaya will comfortably house people up to 6'3 or 4 and James is about 5'10. The latest revision we have made to the monocoque is to lower the floor pans by 2.5inches which creates even more headroom. This was primarily done as more and more people are looking to use the car in competition and we wanted to create more space around the roll cage/helmet area.

James does like to be close to the wheel and runs with the seat pulled well forward - perhaps this is what you are seeing?

We are at the Midlands Motor Show in Coventry this weekend with the car (now back in full rally trim!) if you want to try for yourself.

Cheers all,

Neil.

For more opinions concerning interior space on the Murtaya, if anybody should be worried about fitting it should be the smaller people. I'm 5'10" and when I was test driving the original Murtaya demo car, I had to scoot the seat all the way forward to get to my ideal driving position--and even then I could probably have used another click forward. I also had the stick shift moved forward about an inch for me.

The guys at AMS are also relatively tall, so I don't think too many tall people are gonna have problems, especially with the newere versions. If you're really worried, I'm sure Neil would be happy to let you try out one...

Glad to hear us lankies are catered for - sadly an omission in most sportscars. Thanks for answering the question chaps.

At 5-10 and not too 'fat, I tried the black demo car for room at the Autosport show a few years ago. The roll cage was a bit close I thought but I was used to a caged Impreza at the time.
Dropping the floor and seat by 2.5'' is a really good move and would answer my feeling on the inside.
I think Neil also got the A post cage tubes tighter to the pillar for better visibility?

My Lola cost as much as the Murtaya in the end, and the Murtaya is infinitly more versatile and quicker I think (Lola = 240 bhp/549Kg)plus 4 x 4 of course.

Maybe next year Neil I will venture to Wiscome!

It would make an awsome hillclimb car.

I'm probably the shortest person to have one at the mo (5'7" or so) and my seat is pretty much all the way forward (obviously the attachment to the floor can be changed) but Tom at Adrenaline has got to be about 6'2" and he seems to cope. If you can get in and out of an Elise or VX220 you will be fine.
Plenty of space above my head for a helmet as well so no worries there. Loads of leg room too.
...and a boot.
