Focus ST - anyone had a remap?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking into remapping my ST and just wondered if anyone on here had already done so (I imagine some have). I was after a bit of advice with regards mpg (currently averaging 21), traction(!) and general day-to-day use of the car after a remap. I'd also be interested to know what sort of difference it made to insurance premiums (presuming you've declared it) although I'm going to give Direct Line a ring tomorrow anyway and see what they say.
Finally, a long shot, but anyone tried these guys http://www.cctuning.co.uk as they're the ones I'm looking at using. They claim an increase to 270 bhp for the stage 1 remap. Does this seem realistic?
Thanks in advance.

have a look on focusstoc.com they will have all the answers you could want.
90% of the owners on there have remaps of some sort, there are plenty to choose from.
Mine is running the GGR300 conversion running around 310BHP and i can manage 27/28 mpg on a long run although get heavy footed and that drops to low 20's very easily, as for traction you have to adjust how you drive it slightly but its still very controllable.

i want one for mine too but think a larger intercooler is pretty much essential. i think id pick a specialist and travel a bit rather than use some random company that does remaps generally for german cars (they may well be ok but i would trust a company that has done tens or hundred of focus ST`s much more)
,ve got an ST currently running 315.9bhp 382ft/pd i use dreamscience stratagem plug an play also check out focusstoc .com you,ll find all your answers there
with a plug an play unit like i have or some others you can load and unload as and when you want if it needs to go to frauds for sevice just return to standard map it takes apprx 3-4 minutes to chang emaps i have five maps to choose from mine has been mapped for two years no problems with warrenty

What else have you done to it on top of the DS remap? New exhaust? Bigger intercooler? Maybe even a bigger turbo if you're up to 315bhp....?To the OP - I've also got the Dreamscience remapper and rate it highly. Spend £200-300 on a used one and it's a lot of bang for your buck (270bhp and around 330ft/lb for the DSCI remap on another otherwise stock car).
As mentioned, all the Mountune users I've heard from have loved it. If you're looking for something cheaper that remains 'invisible' once removed (and thereby preserving the warranty) get a Dreamscience Stratagem. DSCi is the 'best' map of the ones that come on the handset IMO.
If you're a signed up member of the STOC you get a discount on Dreamscience as well (saving you about £40 if I recall correctly). A remap alone will see you to around 265-270bhp and around 320-340lb/ft of torque - individual cars vary, mine was around 266bhp and 344lb/ft with a nice fat torque curve peaking around 2250rpm I think.

I ran an ST with the morego 290 conversion and their powergrip suspension setup for 12 months.
The power was very linear and I very rarely suffered from torque steer or wheelspin, unless i was stoopid with the throttle. Indeed, the ST even held its own (and then some) at a track day at oulton park. The only issue id say is the standard brakes arent the best for hauling off the immense speed you gather.
MPG was more than acceptible - i averaged 28-30mpg, but did have a long ish commute.
i have never driven a standard ST so cant compare, but as a package, a modified ST was superb and perfectly driveable everyday.

They updated the Focus prior to the facelift with red lighting interior and a intercooler with an extra row. Wonder if gains are better with this setup opposed to early <56 plate?
I personally would go for the mountune. Not only keeping your warranty, but it's meant to be better than Dreamscience and the likes.
Edit: sorry and re insurance I was quoted an extra £70 with 6 months left 28, 7 years ncb 3 points.

The switch to the 'other' intercooler was somewhat pointless as despite having more rows, they're shallower and as such flow the same amount of air. It's well-recommended to upgrade to a larger one which means the car doesn't suffer with power drops in hotter weather. With a standard intercooler, the drop is noticeable.I personally would go for the mountune. Not only keeping your warranty, but it's meant to be better than Dreamscience and the likes.

As for the difference between things like Mountune and DS, there's reams of info on www.focusstoc.com discussing all the remaps (Code:Red/Bluefin as well as some of the other maps from tuners like Graham Goode Racing (GGR) etc).
The Mountune one is very good, but then so is DS. The DS also has a resale value at the back end when you sell the car whereas the Mountune upgrade might not add greatly to the resale value of the ST overall.
Mountune are currently doing a deal for paid-up members on the site for one week - the deal is very good.

Exactly who says Mountune is better ? Apart from the Mountune owners?Edited by UncappedTag on Thursday 23 July 20:05
Mountune, covered by warranty, insurance under some policies is unaffected Greenlight being one of them. No accounts of peoples cars going into limp mode with mountune.

You may be right, but a one car sample is hardly scientific, is it? Horses for courses - I don't think you justifiably and conclusively say "X is better than Y" quite as simply as you seem to want to do.
FWIW, it cost me around £30 to switch insurance from the OEM car to a DSCI-ed car, and I've had no limp home issues with it.
I suppose the warranty issue may be worth something, but from everything I've read the ST engine in OEM condition is pretty lazily tuned anyway so releasing another 40-50 bhp isn't likely to stress anything unduly.
I think the point was that there are considerably cheaper ways of getting the same kind of power upgrade than the Mountune package offers, and it's an even more compelling comparison if you're looking to tune an older car which is out of warranty.

[/quote)Oh, and the motoring press - Driver's Republic, EVO, Autocar, Performance Ford, Fast Ford and of course Team RS - no one else though....
The only advantage Mountune has is the fact it keeps the warranty, however apart from a couple of the early wolf330 cars I havent heard of many Tuned ST's killing engines, and pretty much everything else is still covered under warranty. Also alot of people are now buying ST's which are coming to the end of the warranty so will be more interested in what gains you actually get for your money.
