E39 no radio reception

Just bought a 98 535i from auction, [£1000 years tax 6 months mot] and the only ! real thing
wrong is really bad reception for the radio, fm and am. Anybody come across this before? Is the aerial part of the window?

it plugs in behind the rear pillar trim, its common for it to become lose, have a look.

Yes mine has the same problem so would be delighted if someone could provide some detailed info.
