Stopping a chicken from being broody?
Discussion
Leading on from the Spot, the horny kitten thread. Once again my wife is away travelling. Once again, I promised nothing untoward would happen to the animals & once again I have had a disaster.
Does anyone know how the hell I can stop a chicken being broody? The stupid bint is sitting in her hen house, refusing to move & looking all misty eyed at me.

Pencil and vaseline. You know the score!!
Seriously though, do you have a cockrel? do you intend on breeding from the chickens or are they just layers? If you leave them with some eggs for a few days, she will soon get bored when they don't hatch. If they are fertilised eggs then get some eggs from the supermarket and swap them for your own (and hope the supermarket ones aren't fertilised!)
This has worked with ours in the past. good luck.

Apologies for being a little incommunicado on this subject - work very rudely got in the way today.
On further investigation, she only seems to be semi broody in as far as she is still laying, but just wanting to sit on the eggs all day afterwards. I tried the cold bath technique with the last chicken that went broody & it made no difference. I'm going to try again tomorrow & over the weekend, but if she doesn't snap herself out of it, it might well be the chop.

Are you around enough to remove eggs when laid and boot her off every time you see her?On further investigation, she only seems to be semi broody in as far as she is still laying, but just wanting to sit on the eggs all day afterwards. Just keep taking the eggs, she'll get bored soon enough, or find somewhere secret to start laying as ours do and then surpirse you when they turn up with 8 little 'uns following behind! If anyone is passing near Bordeaux feel free to pop in and pick up some free range duck... we're overrun!
