Hello,

I need some help with the Mark 5 golf as I’m not the clued up on them. My mum wants to swap her mini for a golf and has a max budget of 13K to spend. There is two must have and they is an Auto box and cruise control. Anything else is a bonus.

Another thing I’m thinking is that the car should be a petrol as she only does 9K a year and my parents don’t like diesels and also that it should be faster than her Manuel mini which rules out the 1.4 and the 1.6 engines. (I thought this would be easy to help them!)

Is the 2.0FSI (150 BHP) engine any good? I have heard that it needs Super unleaded to run well and can give problems if not, Also I note it does not seem to have been for sale very long and is no longer available.

When was the 1.4, 160 BHP petrol engine introduced as I see they are available on the new cars and are the engines any good. They seem very complex but I like the idea of a turbo and a supercharger.

I can’t see a GTI being for her and also they don’t seem to fall into budget very well so basically it’s down to (from what I can see) either the 1.4 or the 2.0 engines.

The TSI 170bhp or 140bhp is an amazing engine! Would strongly recommend one. As for the GTI, well that's another step up but one will fall in your budget (just about). The TSI will most likely still be under warranty oppose to the GTI which will most likely be out of warranty.

Thank you for your comments VAG1. I have told her to drive the 140 TSI engine to see what she thinks so waiting for that outcome by the end of the week.

A friend has an A3 with the 140 engine and I think its ok but what would it be like with an Auto or DSG box?

The DSG box is amazing, ultra quick and smooth. Is your friends a diesel 140? As I'm pretty sure you don't get TSIs in A3s. The power delivery of the TSI is the most impressive thing, very quick and sharp.

The A3 is a manual diesel (07 plate), it has the exhaust pointing down which I thought meant it was a 140 model?

Is the TSI petrol? Am I confused!?

Yes the TSI is a 1.4 petrol engine. Before you run off it has a turbo and a supercharger which gives it 140hp or 170hp depending on which model you choose. Great cars with average economy.

That sounds perfect and I'm sure the 140hp will be plenty. I knew they where now doing a 160hp model with the S/C and Turbo but didn't known they did a 140 and 170 version.

I will see what I can find, thanks for your help.

Bit of a late reply but the model you should get is the 1.4 TSI 122 MATCH DSG. Hugely desirable, very well equippped and strong performance and economy with 0-60 coming in just under 10 seconds and easily does 40mpg+. Its not the twincharged engine, and instead just uses a turbocharger, but still very very good and extremely highly praised by the motoring press. Don't let its capacity fool you. The 2.0 FSI Auto is a bad choice, its very undesirable, un-economical and no quicker than the less powerful (but same torque) 1.4 TSI 122.

EDIT - Just to clarify the 1.4 TSI is available with the turbo only in 122 form, and the turbo and supercharger in 140/170 form for the MK5 and 160 for the MK6. Match trim can only be combined with the 122, and this model has the most interior equipment and is the only one with cruise control standard.

Hi va1o,

I have found the 1.4 TSI 122 Match and we did look at the 109 BHP TDI version which has been dismissed as has the 2.0 N/A as I’ve heard bad things about this. The only difference is the budget has changed and there is an absolute max of 16K which has to include any work the car may such as new tires, service etc.

We are now actively looking (with no success yet) for a GTI DSG with five doors, the only must haves are A/C (they all have this) and cruise control which seems to be hard to find, can this be retro fitted? Anything extra is a bonus.

I’m going to try and test drive a 1.4 TSI 122 Match when I get the chance but now the budget is more 15K seems a lot for a up to 1 year old car when if your quick enough, the odd GTI pops up at around 2 years old and therefore still has a little of the warranty left.

Va1o, you don’t work for VW by any chance?

Cruise can be retrofitted by your dealer quite easily, all that needs replacing is the stalk and then the car needs to be coded via VAG-COM. Costs about £150 usually, which is about the same as what it would have cost in a factory order.

If you say you have have 16k to spend thats into MK6 teritory, you could get a brand new Golf TSI 122 SE DSG 5dr at drivethedeal.com on a 59-plate http://www.drivethedeal.com/buy-a-new-car/volkswag... This obviosuley has the full 3-year warranty and you get the benefit of the fact no-one will have driven the car before. Equipment more or less same as the Match so cruise etc included.

Alternatively, save 4k and get an 08 MK5 Match TSI 122 DSG which will have at least 18months warranty. This one is very cheap and won't stay available for long - http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLK...

GTIs are great but they will cost a lot more to run and it will have less warranty, so it depends where your priorities are and whether you need the extra power etc.

Thank you, that is very helpful indeed, and more things to think about.

Interesting that you can get a 59 reg Match for that price! Looks like it could be good.

Little bit of thread resurrection here, but has anyone any experience of the true mpg that the two Tsi engines give - have to make a decision re company car soon, and really don't want to go diesel (or electric wink) if I can avoid it.

From what I heard, it's not all it's cracked up to be. Around low 30's I think.

Hmmm, not enough if that's the case - anyone got first hand experience of what I might expect to get?

Daily journey is c55 miles each way, btw - 5 miles built up at either end, with 90 leptons on the cruise in the middle section.

I don't have one, but the reviews of the 122 TSI seem to suggest its pretty good for mpg, and I know my mate gets about 30mpg in town driving in his 170 TSI MK5.

Interesting - I seem to be getting 50+ around town in the Totota P**** (the car that dare not speak its name on here), and 47-47mpg ave (calculated) on the journey described above, which is seriously impressive.

No I haven't bought one, but Toyota UK seem to think I'm our company's fleet buyer for some unfathomable reason wink so have given me one for a while.

I think your best bet is 2.0 GT TDI. Great power and similar economy to that thing you're driving around.

Painfully boring, noisy and slow compared to the amazing 1.4 TSI. If your reccomending a diseasel over the twincharger that tells ms you obviousley havent driven one nor been the passenger in one wink
