A request to those that are in the know for advice. I am looking to replace my ageing Golf TDI with a Mondeo. The thing is I'm not sure which model to plump for. It has to be diesel as I have a long commute, but would like something with maximum driver appeal, as my trip to work is over the fabulous roads of the North Yorkshire Moors.

I have narrowed it down to the ST TDCI, and the 2.2 TDCI (exactly the same engine as in the ST I think?). The ST's go for quite a bit more, and I'm wondering if it is worth the premium. I have read that the suspension settings from the ST220 were carried over to the diesel version and these don't get on as well with the lighter diesel engine (my drive to work is on some very bumpy roads). I suppose you'd have a bit more grip and a few more toys with the ST, quite like the look of the body kit too.

Which should I go for? Is there anything else I should be considering?

The diesel weighs slightly more than than the V6 so i wouldn't trust wherever you have heard that. The ST is a much nicer looking car, have you considered a Titanium X? Some came with the ST body kit. Look out for expensive injector failures, EGR issues and DMF failure on these cars.

Thanks Dave- got my info from EVO magazines website. Already knew about the injectors but not other issues- will be on the look out- cheers. Not too fussed about the body kit as I like a good Q car.

I drove a 2.2TDCI Zetec brand new, before test driving the 6 month old ST TDCI. I chose the ST.

IMO, the ST handling is, without a shadow of doubt, worth the premium. I am sure it isn't quite the ST220, but it does love a country road.

It is far more enjoyable than either of my Audi S6s were on a twisty road, and better on motorways.

If you can find a diesel with recaros, that's the ticket. I love these seats.

You can upgrade the anti roll bars to ST220 spec... then get the Focus ST brakes on it, complete with a JP exhaust and it'll fly. Remap will see 180bhp easily.

And the bushes, and the lower arms, and the hubs, and the drop links, and the dampers, and the springs, and the steering rack smile
