Hiya folks

Son who is 18 is looking for his very first car and for insurance and reliabilty purposes looking for a good VW Golf - budget up to about £5.5k - no trade ins involved..

Can anybody recommend any small dealers that specialise in VW and might have a small selection or be able to source a Golf or any individuals with decent Golfs out there thinking of selling with reasonably low miles / FSH / VGC - he's fussy - same as his father !!

Thanks
Brian

pickwick performance along the coast are good for VAG sales cars.
Do you have a model in mind?

For your budget might get a good final edition GT TDi or 1.8T if the insurance isnt too horrific. The later ones tend to be better spec'ed this applied to most of the engines. the 1.6 16v is not too bad all round either. the SDi is pedestrian.

It is worth doing a scan across autotrader.co.uk/ pistonheads.co.uk/sales and see what falls within budget. you should get a rather clean low miles MK4 for that money. I wouldnt discount a Seat Leon either, generally better specified for the same cash.

Aged 18 the insurance on my mk2 1.4 Golf was £1500 per year.

That was 10 years ago.

For Mk4 golfs i'd avoid the 1.4 as they are hugely underpowered but insurance might well be the deciding factor. For the cars mentioned above it will be expensive to insure so if I were him id go for a tidy 1.6.

I would also buy privately rather than through a stealer.
cheers Ed

Guys
Thanks for the advice

One of our HGV Drivers has had a couple of decent Audi A3s from Pickwick - I'll give them a phone

Keeping a daily look on Pistonheads and Autotrader - what a difference a pair of decent alloys can make to a standard Golf - priced them at about £600 - Do you need to advise your insurance and does it affect the premiums ?

We have heard the Golf 1.4 is underpowered so looking for 1.6 / 1.8 upwards petrol / diesel ..

After he gets his Golf I'm going to start looking again at TVRs - S series - keep you in touch ..

Brian..
