2002 BMW 503i - Transmission Issue? Need Advice
Discussion
Hey guys,
This is my first post at PistonHeads and I need some advice on a transmission issue.
The "Service Engine Soon" light on my 2002 BMW 530i (87,000 miles) has come on twice now and I have taken it to a local independent repair shop for repairs (they have a former BMW mechanic working there and he posts his credentials). The shop also claims to have expensive diagonistic equipment specifically for BMW vehicles.
The shop mechanic said it was a transmission fault code(during my first visit) and that changing the transmission oil might cure the problem (this was completed). There was also a check of the pan (dropped the pan) and no metal fragments were found. Shortly after this was finished, the light came back on.
On my second visit to the shop, I was told the one of the syloniod valve bodies was out of tolerance with the other resistant values (of the other ones), and it needed to be replaced. Shortly after this was completed, the light came on again. Now, they are telling me the torque converter seal might be pinched and this could cost an additional $1,000 dollars and still might not fix the problem of the light coming on.....I guess the replacing the transmission is the last step for these knuckleheads.
I decided to remove my car from their facility as they would not guarantee their work and to date, I have dished out over $700 for absolutely nothing. Funny thing, the transmission feels perfect and has never slipped or jerked and is smooth as silk.
Question? Could anyone provide advice on what the problem may be? And yes, I will be taking my BMW to a dealer for the next round.
Nick
