So given that you can purchase either a 2006 or so Bentley Continental Flying Spur and a 2007 or later Mercedes S600 for around 85-90K USD which would you take?

Obviously the Bentley is the first choice but then when you start really thinking about each car....
The Merc has everything as standard. While the Bentley does not have nearly as much standard and most of the used cars aren't fully loaded. like radar cruise control, keyless entry, reclining rear seats, etc. So really the Merc has a case for itself.
However the Bentley is a Bentley and it probably drives better, it is AWD, more HP.

Had both of these out for a couple of days with the old man.

The stretched L version of the merc is much more of a match for the bentley than the standard S, well it is for the rear passengers at least.

From a driving point of view they're neither here nore there, both have a comfortable ride and waft along a treat, its a limo if you want a driving experience buy something else. The extra power of the bentley is a giggle for annoying some boy racer types but thats it.

The bentley is a much nicer place to be in my opinion, while the merc has more toys the bentley is more comfortable and you feel more cocooned from the world outside.

Personally I'd take the bentley everyday of the week, but I think for buying SH the merc does start to look more attractive with its lower running costs, its probably more reliable too.

No it isn't. The Bentley is a Volkswagen Phaeton in drag. If you're going to buy a Bentley, buy a proper one: an Arnage T, a Continental R/T or a Brooklands.

Personally, I would take a Phaeton: invisibility must be the greatest luxury of all.
