Sorely tempted....
Discussion
Hi all,
Just nipped over from the Speed 6 forum. My wife saw a nice S today and I told her that they could be picked up for a good price. Did a little trawl, and come up with this on the classified.
http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1140427.htm
She's sorely tempted to replace her old, 170,000 mile, supercharged MX5 for it. But I know nothing about the S series (other than the fact that I fell in love with them in the late 80's)so what would I be letting myself in for, and what do you need to look out for?
TIA

Lee,
No doubt there'll be someone much more knowledgeable about the V6 along in a minute but it's all about the chassis. Outriggers are prone to rot if not treated as are the trailing arms. Electrics can be a bit temperamental.
There's a good buyers guide here: http://www.tvrsseries.com/
The main worry that I'd have with the car you highlight is the lack of miles- mine gets better the more I drive it
If you're at Kingston Lacey on Sunday then I'd be happy to let you have a poke around mine and fill you in on the ownership experience...
Cheers

Always wondered if an S and a Tamora would make a good combination
I'd make sure your missus likes it and can drive it without to much bother. They can be a little bit tedious as a daily driver (only silly little things), great fun though and a superb noise. I drove mine today and after a (very) short blat in 1st in a small tunnel under 1/2 throttle up to 3000rpm, I said to myself:
'my.....goooooooness - that's a SWEET noise!'

If you drive it and service it regularly it will be a great fun reliable car.
Too many people get a classic car, only to get it out of the garage every two months and expect it to perform.
I had an MX5 a few years ago and loved it - the S is a different class though if you ask me.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I'm off the impulse pedal and back to thinking straight. I'll give it some proper thought and investigation, and get the wife to look at some close up before we move any further forward. She loves classic looking cars but it's the driving/living with experience that is more important.
Harvey, I'll try to find you on Sunday for the offered discussion. If you see me (mine is a reflex charcoal Tamora, T40 ORA - although you could probably have guessed that bit!) say Hi.
Thanks for the mail Graham.

Mycroft seems pretty happy with the partnership

The S's are great cars, a lot of people who have them made their choice after trying MX5's. However when funds allow I will be getting myself a Tamora

My wife preferred the power steering in my old Chimaera and found it easier to drive - apart from the fact that she is pretty short and struggled to reach the pedals. With the S she loves the driving position but cannot/does not drive it cos it hasn't got the power steering and she finds it far too heavy for her. Oh well, more
for me then

Lee, I'm also going Sunday, taking the S along. You can also give mine a good look at too if you like and I'll show exactly first hand what can go wrong with them.
Would love to see your car too! I agree with Ian, I too aspire to a Tamora somehow without parting with the S

OK, I'll try to find you on Sunday - thanks.
The price of Tamoras is getting lower, to my mind. At least, when you buy one new and see how little you have to pay for a low mileage one
the prices look damned low!Excellent car though.
Ian, hadn't thought about the power steering thing. Although my missus is pretty strong - she drove the 5 for a couple of months without PS when the belt and pully from the S/C came adrift. It is a thought though.
I would still so love to have two TVRs on the drive.... His 'n' Hers..... Dream on, eh?

If anyone else is thinking of looking at that S - its in my area and I would be happy to take a pre look for you before you make a big trip.

Graham, I'm down in Southampton and wouldn't mind taking you up on your offer of having a look if you don't mind. G
This is the problem looking for S's, they all seem to be up north! Saying that its difficult to get south of Southampton.

Hi Lee . The S is a heavier car than the Tam to drive and i should think the MX5 so it depends if your wife likes the S . There are plenty of ladies that drive S's but my wife doesn't like mine .
The S will be cheaper to own than a Tam and chassis aside they present no real reliability problems . If you buy a good one your unlikely to lose out .
Dale

Hi Dale,
Thanks for the info. I had a look at a few today at a meet, and a good chat with a couple of owners. Nice to hear from someone who has experience of both cars.
next step if for me to get the wife to have a close look at some and then see if I can ger her a drive in one. She likes solid, so she may not mind heavier. Won't know until she tries though.
