To the two cops on the A4 - Gilette corner this am
Discussion
7:30am, temperature hovering around freezing, and there you were getting laser practice. I hope it was worth the early start
I've now seen several times police parked up there (just before the Audi garage, if anyone knows the area) presumably taking speed readings on vehicles coming from/going to the Glaxo lights. Oddly, they seem to be frequently there late at night. Yesterday morning I saw them on the opposite side of the road, waved, then saw what looked like the pursuit squad a hundred metres further on my side.
I stopped waving
Update: Blimey, there were more of them today, four policemen with two cars and a bike, although I didn't see any pursuit cars. Weird. If I catch them there again and I can spare the time, I think I might stop for a polite chat to see what they're up to. I'd better replace the blown taillight first, though

I police that area. There have been 9 deaths in the vicinity in the last year.
Nice to meet you, I live in the area. I hope I won't have to meet you professionally any time soon
I presume those were motoring related deaths? I've often seen signs of accidents in the Gillette junction, my guess is that red light jumping is frequent as there are often long queues for all the lights, and the time between one set phasing to red and the next to amber-green is too long which is an obvious temptation to keep going.

Sorry to upset you all but YES they were all speed related.
One was speed/drink.
There have been a laege number of serious injury collisions also along that stretch of road.
Some of the Officers doing the speed hits are on my relief.
What were the primary causes of these RTA's?
And what were the secondary and subsequent contributory causes?
Monster1 I seem to remember that the roads leading to this intersection are heavily populated with speed cameras, are these fatalities caused by speeds in excess of the posted limits?
If the fatalities are related to red light jumping there are 'engineering solutions', why not suggest an increase in the amber/red timing to reduce the 'window of uncertainty', do you think this may make a difference?

Let's not maintain the deliberate (government) confusion here! By your own statement, at least one was primarily drink-related. It is not unreasonable to assume that the (excess) speed was a consequence of the consumption of alcohol ... so this was NOT a speed-related incident and should not be counted as a speed-related incident!
If someone is drunk and crashes, it's because they are drunk and cannot properly control the vehicle ... speed per se is not the issue.
Streaky
the g/w/road has always had a problem with accidents.i know a fair few people who have been smacked into on that road,my mate had his car written off at gillette corner by a local in a beaten up nissan bluebird with no insurance who shot the lights.
the driving skill of those who use the road is usualy well below the crappy norm we usualy all encounter and the amount of cars that are obviously unroadworthy with un-tested drivers is amazing yet i never used to see them stopped...infact,ive not even seen so much as a 'tax pull' or a 'mot/emissions check' in force unlike on cowley road, uxbridge where the police pull you into the sliproad by the rover dealer to check your docs.
i agree with streaky on the 'drink related' speeding matter though,if the person driving wasnt pished up the driver probably wouldnt have been driving like a dick and crashing.this wasnt a speed related incident, its simple d.d.
oh well, time to finish work and go home to my pit......night all!!

Caused by...........??
funny how it's always speeding that is blamed by you plods is that because you only have speed guns, one wonders if you had a device that detects undue care and attention you would be catching the real culprits and not some poor
who has problebly driven the same road for years without an incident no wonder we have lost faith in the plodsGassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
