Does anyone know if a gearbox from a 1979 Esprit will fit an 88? I believe they changed somewhere in there didn't they?

I know the input shaft is different.
Don't know if it would work.
Don't know if the parts were strengthened.
With the turbo I don't know if the box can take the HP or what the clutch would be like.

Maybe Jim knows.

Call JAE or Ray at RD.

Mark,

The gearbox itself will fit. The bellhousing is slightly different as the slave is mounted much more to the 12:00 O'clock position than the later ones.

Also, the case has two drain plugs vs a single one on the C-35 box introduced later in '85. There is very little internal difference between the two, perhaps some of the parts were hardened, nothing significant. But, we've never been able to determine that with accuracy.

Also, the input shaft is machined differently on the C-35 box to relieve stress on the stress risers at the spline cuts, but currently, we are thinking that this has led to premature failure and damage to the spigot and crank and is not a good modification. It may raise the failure potential from torgue, but it seems to allow the circlip to slip which seems to be the failure cause of the other stuff. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE

Thanks Jim, that is good to know. I guess what you are saying is: it would fit with a little modification?
