Along Came An Aspid...

Spanish design consultancy brings gawky hi-tech sports car to Salon Prive

You don't often get a chance to see an Aspid in the flesh, so if you think you've been missing out you'd better get over to the Salon Privé being held at the Hurlingham Club in London from 22-24 July.

Aspid will be making a rare UK appearance
Aspid will be making a rare UK appearance
IFR Automotive is the company behind the Aspid, and Ignacio Fernández the man behind the company. You can meet both at the event if you want to discuss the technology and performance of this unique design, or perhaps you may want to offer your services with paper and crayons!

Maybe that's a bit unfair, but to our eyes the euros 107k Aspid does look a bit of a dog's dinner. It goes well though, by all accounts, with the company claiming a super-bike rivalling 0-62mph time of 2.8secs, 0-100mph in 5.9secs, and 0-100mph-0 in approximately 9secs for a 400bhp powered version. (Which means it brakes from 100mph to a standstill in a lunch-losing 3.1secs, in case you were wondering.)

Oddly enough, the press release announcing these figures doesn't tell us what the Aspid packs under its hood, although less powerful versions get a 2.0 turbo four.

“It is very much a driver’s car and certainly has the ability to exhilarate,” says Fernández. “But it’s also a very safe car and easy to live with on a daily basis, whether driving into town or on a long distance journey.”

"Despite its lightweight construction, the Aspid actually comes better equipped than most supercars that are typically twice the weight," the company claims. "Inside the climate controlled cabin the sophisticated electronic system incorporates a touch screen in the centre console that controls everything from the sensitivity of the power steering to the integral data logging. Another screen in the steering wheel displays all relevant data in a simple and clear presentation."

Apparently the Aspid meets both FIA safety standards as well as European road car homologation requirements and is unique therefore in being a genuine ready-to-race high performance road car.

“Prospective customers interested in racing the car have worked out how cost competitive the Aspid is compared with preparing and equipping other makes of cars for the race track,” says Fernandez.  “With the Aspid it all comes as standard.”

I'd like to see it try 0-100-0 in nine seconds!

An odd design, but I quite like it, but maybe I'm reminiscing about the Cloud cars from the Empire strikes back though.

I have to say, I quite like it. The performance figures are pretty good too if true. But 107k, thats a hell of a lot of money an buys some very serious metal. Certainly an interesting machinge though.

I think I'd rather have a Caterham R500 for the weekends and a 997 for every day use instead...and still have change.

With that hardtop and all that kit it must weigh at least 700kg. WIth 400bhp I reckon it'd need to be around the 500kg mark to make the claimed performance figures.

I think is hard to justify the Aspid against, like you say, the combination of a Caterham and a 911. It is virtually a rolling concept car though with some nice touches, such as the sound and lighting management system.

It looks a bit of a mess but apparently it is a seriously good piece of kit with some very interesting design and technical details. Evo magazine gave the prototype a very positive wrie up a few months back.

Yeah, i remember it getting a pretty good review in EVO - ISTR that the only down point was the price, and i suspect that will be the car's biggest flaw. That said, i think it would be hard pushed to be as much of an out and out driver's car as a Caterham or an Atom, and it is unlikely to be as good every day as a 997 or M3.

I think you'd just end up with a car that is the worst of both worlds. Having said that, good luck to them because they have obviously set out to build a car with bonkers performance and i think that should always be celebrated!

i think it has the s2000 lump in s/c'd

i like it, but for 107k no chance, new atom and caterham with 1000bhp per tonne are around that price and i assume will be ALOT faster/better

Weird, i posted the first comment on this and it ended up in its own thread somewhere else....

Interesting car the Aspid.

Had a chat with the guys on their stand at Autosport in Jan. Its a really well engineered bit of kit. The concept is essentially a Caterham 7 re-engineered with modern materials and hi-tech gadgets like aircon, touchscreen controls, wi-fi, sat nav etc. Plus there are twin-disc brakes and some other innovative stuff.

I know someone who's driven one and they rated it highly.

Of course the downside is that it has looks only a mother could love, and at 100k+ you won't be seeing many at trackdays anytime soon.

I think it started out as more of a tech demonstrator than a real production car proposition, but they realised they may be able to part some rich eccentrics from their cash on the side wink

So it's basically just like a Renault Megane but with added exhilaration ability. scratchchin

I sat in this car at the PistonHeads show and I really like it. The roof opens as well as the door to help you get in and out, but it was a bit like getting into my MG Midget years ago when at university (with the door bar of the roll cage).

They claim the car is quicker that the Citroen World Rally car Soeb uses across the tarmac stages of Spain, so if that is the case I can see it having those performance figures!

I personally like the car, and having a (sort-of) rally background is right up my street.

I had a close look at one of these at the 2008 london motorshow - I have to say it looked very impressive. That touch screen interface was brilliant too. As far as the getting in and out of it, I'm 6'2" and I found it easier to get in and out of than a Lotus Elise with the roof off!!!

Great looking little machine just a but too expensive for me.

I think it looks a little nicer than a caterham, but if I could I would change that American-esque style grill.. And 100mph to 0 in 3.1 seconds......... now THAT i would like to see. I hope it's got good seatbelts.
