Following on from my thread on starter cameras I've been offered a used Eos 350d body plus 2 batteries for the princely sum of £180.
Is this good? Whats the camera like as I know its been superceded for a couple of years now. I need to factor in the cost of a couple of lenses and the other camera I'm looking at is a Nikon D60 with 2 lense package for £511.

What sort of cost should I be looking to pay for a 350 body or would I be better off going for the brand new Nikon?

I have a Canon 450D, but, given the choice between the 350D and the Brand new Nikon id go for the D60. Just because its new and more advanced.
Hope this helps

That was pretty much my thinking. To buy the 2 lenses the D60 comes with would cost I guess, around £300-350, making the Canon almost as expensive.
If on the other hand the Canon was significantly better (to a total beginner) then I'd plump for that!

Hi Tony,

Roo's is a 450D if that helps.

Plumbed for that over a Nikon because, apparently, it is easier and cheaper to buy the lenses.

IIRC she paid about £550 for the body, boggo lens (30-70?), a 70-300 lens, bag and 4Gb card.

IIRC, the 400d was quite a step up from the 350d. I'd have a check to see what's going on ebay. The d60 will have a better AF system, but as I understand you're limited with the nikon glass you can use.

Just because it isn't the lastest model doesn't make it bad.

Funnily enough I was looking at 350D's on eBay yesterday for a friend, seems body only they are going for around £200 so £180 seems about fair at mates rates. £300 will get you better lenses than the basic kit ones.

More advanced? Is that why the D60 lacks mirror lockup, DoF preview, bracketing and only has 3 focus points and cant auto focus with half nikons lens's?

D60 is in a lot of ways a lot LESS advanced than the 350D and I certainly wouldnt swap mine for one.

Drawbacks of the 350D? Small LCD and viewfinder, menu system is a bit of a pain.

Noise isnt great but then its not bad compared to some of the newer ones either.

I have a 350D and 40D, and have taken better shots with my 350D biggrin The 40D is excellent, but the 350D really isn't that bad at all, especially for that price..

A lot of that is personal preference and you know it. For example, I never use MLU or auto-bracketing but I do use spot metering, which the D60 has and the 350D doesn't.

I went to do a comparison on dpreveiew and the 350D is so old it isn't even listed any more.

As for 'doesn't focus with half Nikon's lenses', we know that for most people it's not important as almost all modern Nikkors are AF-S. We need to put personal preference aside and try to give unbiased information if we can, because the OP's needs are very unlikely to be exactlt the same as yours or mine.
