Helmet with built-in intercom?
Discussion
Most high end helmets have recesses which you can either put the flat headphone speakers in. However, most of the higher end intercoms tend to use in-ear earplugs for clarity and to remove background noise, then digital filtration on the mic to stop further background noise entering the system.
Probably not what you're looking for exactly, but an option for some; Dainese make a Bluetooth helmet... you'll need two of course, and they're not cheap @ £390 each... but they will connect to your mobile as well as each other!

I was after something a bit cheaper than a high end solution
Sparco do a closed loop system which runs off a PP9 battery which has 2 DIN plug connectors, with boom mics attached

I'm trying to avoid something that uses batteries, and ideally want it to plumb into the existing Peltor FMT-110 amp which is for road use with practice headsets. (E.G. boom mike, etc.)
I think you might struggle. Because I work in different cars with different people all the time, and some have intercoms fitted in their cars, I asked one on the top racing intercom manufacturers if they could fit something to my helmets that had interchangeable jack adapters so they could plug into to different systems and save having to keep pulling out headsets and fitting different ones, and their answer was no, it wouldn't work because it wouldn't be possible to get a headset that would be compatible with other systems and jack plugs. That's why I bought the portable battery powered OMP intercom as a back up.timarnold said:

Sparco do helmets compatible with Peltor amps. These are the most popular choice in rallying, where clarity of comms is very important. I think the Stilo hrange is compatible with an adapter.
I got my last three Peltors from Peter Lloyd Rallying (go google).
