I'm bored and I find this stuff interesting so I thought I'd do a quick run-down of some of the garbage you could buy if you wanted to buy a new car today in some less fortunate countries than ours...

Starting with Russia, I give you the Lada 112 'Coupe' which looks like a cross between Quazimodo and a Morris Marina Coupe.

Check out the sporty interior!

How about James Thompson's latest company car, Scuderia Togliatti's finest, the Lada Prioria

It looks alarmingly like a late 90s Daewoo but as we live in the UK we'll never be able to compare the two.

Now over to Iran, where they're too busy irritating Israel to design their own cars so most of the stuff there are lightly warmed over old Peugeots, but occasionally they do find time to design a car and have come up with this, the Soren Samand, which sounds like a malt loaf crossed with some kind of cosmetics.

It also looks like a late 90s Korean saloon.

However you can still buy this, the Bardo pickup, based on the Pakyan saloon which itself is a Hilman Hunter with a Peugeot 504 drivetrain.

It'll run on 87 RON petrol (ideally with plenty of lead in it) and has 4 forward gears.

So to India, everyone knows what the Tata Nano is but the car it's about to depose as India's number one is this, the Maruti 800

If you're thinking it looks a lot like an early 80s Suzuki Alto then you're an anorak, but you're right. It's also twice the base price of the Nano.

In the UK we had the Ford Scorpio, which was horrifically ugly, in India they have the Mahindra Scorpio, which is horrifically ugly.

How about heading to Egypt, where you can buy a Nasr Florida, a car which was briefly sold in the UK in the early 90s as the Yugo Sana.

In Malaysia as well as the normal Protons and Peroduas we get here you can buy this...

The Naza Forza - a re-badged Chinese supermini

So, what have I missed? I've deliberately avoided China because frankly, I'd be here all night. Sadly kit manufacturing of European cars is becoming more common and as result there are fewer nasty locally designed sheds on the roads now but there must be more out there. As an example of this sad situation Borat probably works in a factory making the previous model Skoda Octavia in Kazakhstan now, and the new Volga Siber is actually the old Chrysler Sebring frown

Who was that Chinese company who made pastiche British cars - there was a Riley Elf, Mk.2 Jag, Rolls Royce, and some awful cross between a Panther and a 1930s American gangster car, all based on very ordinary Jap metal.

The Riley Elf was the best - the nose was grafted on to a mid-80s Nissan Micra with no effort made to style the rear of the car! laugh

It is based on the Tipo, IIRC it was developed by Zastava using most of the Tipo mechanical bits but with different styling and was originally built in Yugoslavia until NATO bombed the factory and put it out of action.

I live in the UK, but will have a fair bash at comparing the Daewoo with the Lada:

Ones st. the other ones st.

There we are, fair test and a fairly even outcome!

I just get a pic of a Corvette with a message about using an embed code, which I don't think is what you were going for.

I've seen a lot worse interiors than that.

The Lada looks like a Saab and the Soren like a Skoda. In many of these cases, however, the choice is this...or walk. In Siberia, I think I'd take the car. In India, it does beat the tuk-tuk style 2-strokes and elephants and the Hindustan Ambassador:

"Aargh, your car is on my feckin' foot"
whicjh is essentially a 50's British Morris Oxford you can still buy new.
