So, according to the figures in evos shootout between the RS and St, the ST is quicker (allbeit in a straight line!) Makes the ST seem like a performance bargain.

not a great deal difference in the standard ST and the RS on track....

http://www.fastestlaps.com/index.php?page_id=compa...

i wonder what the 'tuners' will get out of the RS?

eta: the RS is over 150kg heavier than the ST.... that's 2 fat passengers worth!

2 fat passengers???? 2 fairly skinny ones actually.
I'm 120kg and while I'm not by any means slender, I'm not exactly in the land of elasticated waists and High & Mighty either.

I'd be surprised if the RS is anywhere near that much heavier than the ST - somewhere in the 50 - 75kg range might be more like it.

It is an interesting question to compare the two actually. If it was a new vs new @ list prices situation then I would spend the extra on the RS every day of every week.

However, if it was a new RS vs a 1yr old ST with Mountune added, I'd go for the ST and use the rest on a Caterfield or an Elise. A much better all round day to day combo IMHO - I haven't driven an RS but I would suspect that as impressive as it is, the fun from the weekend car would more than cover that angle.

add one pinch of salt hehe

the fastestlaps site and letstorquebhp both state that the rs is near as dammit 1500kg and that the ST is 1350kg.... not sure where they got their info from.... i'm guessing EVO mag or similar.....

don't get me wrong, i too would pick the RS without a doubt.... if money was no object.... but in reality, i'll stick with my Civic thanks.... laugh

There are a number of tuners who can extract the same kind of performance upgrade from a stock ST for a lot less than the official Mountune upgrade.

I bought a Dreamscience ECU remapper for £200, and the DSCI map is reckoned to increase power from 225 to 270bhp (I think from memory evo estimated the Mountune upgrade pack to be good for around 280, even though the official figure is something like 256).

Yes, it still doesn't have the kudos of an RS but with ST prices where they are, you could buy a 1-2 year old one for half the cost of a new RS and then a few hundred quid on a remap.

I think the point is there are already 375/400 bhp RS's out there so have Ford slipped up by putting it out as std with Modded ST performance.

The correct answer is...

Buy this - http://pistonheads.com/sales/1125640.htm
then this - http://pistonheads.com/sales/1181267.htm

Then maybe an intercooler and an lsd and hey presto an RS for under £11k that doesn't make you look like the coolest 18 year old in town.

I'd love an RS but really it's far too much money to spunk up a tree for the sake of an RS badge. Body-kit is awful (espically compared to the great job they did to the mk1 focus RS) and the wheels are going to have to be cahnged as soon as you buy it (again a pity considering the great wheels that came on the mk1 RS focus)

The EVO article shows the two cars - the ST is actually sitting on a set of Motorsport weight scales.. so the weights are correct.. whether the cars had similar fuel on board was not said and could easily skew the result.

For info - 1litre of fuel weights 1KG.

Actually, a litre of fuel weighs 738g nerd

I would have gone for the Mountune if i hadn't already opted for a Dreamscience remapper and i very nearly went for the new RS until i was found wanting when asked to justify spending £20k more than the value of my current 06' ST.... for another Focus!!!

i thought it would have been more than 1kg ie heavier than water....

(you're gonna tell me a litre of water doesn't weigh a kilo now aren't you???)

No, it's often a useful thing to remember that a litre of fresh water equals a kilo, but the specific gravity of petrol is around .738, so therefore it's lighter than a litre of water teacher
