I went out for a drive on Sunday and pulled up to a gas station to fill up my 1/2 full tank. As I started the engine to drive away she stalled on me, so I restarted several times, but it wouldn't even idle very long. It got progressively wrong, which suggested fuel delivery problems. I wiggled relays, connectors, etc, but gave up and towed it home. In the garage I verified a strong spark, so I proceeded to check for fuel pressure after the filter. I disconnected the line and cranked the ignition wich produced zero flow. I then traced the fuel lines to the well by the MEMCAL and noticed two wires coming from the cover. I disconnected them and open the ignition to make sure I still had fuel needle movement. Just watned to make sure these were not the sending unit leads. I then measured resistance across and measure about 5MOhm. This told me it was an open circuit, I then applied 12 to the leads, but nothing happened, not even a spark. If these are truly the fuel pump leads it tells me my fuel pump has died. Am I totally off in my reasoning? If my pump is gone, does anyboy know where can I get a reliable replacement?
This is for a 1995 S4S with 20Kmi. Thanks in advance for your helpful tips and advise.
Manny.

Mine did something similar a year and a half ago. It was (finally) discovered to be a known problem with the software in the stock ECU on the S4s. It was reprogrammed and has been good since. It would go from perfect to no start many times. Has yours started back up yet?

Hi Skerd.

I workded on it some more last night and I still cannot get it started. I checked all the fuses and relays in the rear banck. I don't know if reseting it would work. I even disconnected the battery for several minutes to clear things up. I even bypassed the relay and nothing. Not even any noise of a running pump. Does anybody know for sure where the fuel pump or pumps are in an S4S? Is it inside the rigth fuel tank or somewhere below the chasis as in previous models?
Thanks

Manuelin,

Yes, the fuel pump is inside the right hand (passenger) side fuel tank.

Although unlikely, make sure your fuel filter isn't completely clogged.

Hope this helps,

It is an absolute PAIN to get that pump out! You have to work one handed.
It's located exactly bellow the back right window, that has Esprit S4s written on it.

The part matches a VS Holden Ute, which makes it a GM part. Lotus wanted A$450 for it, I paid A$175 from GM.
If you take it into a parts supply store, they'll be able to match it up for you.

It does sound like the fuel pump. Have you checked for any stored error codes?
