After Hooning around France a week or so ago, my front tyres are splitting between the tread again. Loads of tread left as well. furious

Anyhow, the rears are only just legal so it's time to change all four.

Currently on Dunlop SP8080s which the car has been on since it left the factory. Looking to change to another make. What is everyone else running on their cars and how are they getting on with them?

Current favourite is to go with Michelin PS2s. Can anyone comment on their wear rate?

DAZ
(Car also in today for a new steering pump after giving up assistance a few times on some french swingbacks!)

I had the original Pilot Sport on the front and they lasted 45.000 km and still more than 3 mm left - hardest material known to man, replaced (now on PS2) because they started to rumble.

Have had PS2 on the rear for more than 30.000 km and still very decent thread. I do a lot of motorway driving and am not racing from stoplight to stoplight in city traffic + DSC always on, which probably helps save the rears.

Very impressed with the PS2 but would also consider the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric but no first hand experience.

Hi Mate,

I have run PS2's for the last 3 years on my M5, I had the Dunlop 8080's and hated them - Traction control light was on all the time!

I have got a pair of PS2's that I am selling - Brand New £275 for the pair.

PM for info - I have sent you my number by PM.

I didnt think they made 8080's anymore. Still, not a bad thing.

Ive currently changed to Eagle F1's and I highly recommend them.

When I bought my car it was already fitted with P Zeros, they seem great so far but nothing to compare with, due change in about 2K so not sure if I should stick to Pirelli or look elsewhere?.

I've got Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s on mine and they seem to be wearing well but I'm pretty sure they're out of production now.
There may be some kicking around but I've heard ones made in China are apparently not as good as ones made in Germany (?).

Mines on Falken 452's all round, came with the car, as per AC Motors i have nothing to compare it too at the moment (specifically on the m5 anyway) but so far they seem pretty good, especially when given the cost of replacements

Thanks

40K on a set of rears?

You either do mainly motorway miles, have no grip or no fun in the M5!

I am lucky to get 15K out of a set of rears, and belive me I have a lot of fun and plenty of grip!

A slightly different view:

I had PS2s on my M3 for a long time (I know it's a lighter car) and the wear rate was good, but outright grip was only ok.

I swapped to Toyo T1-Rs, which wear much quicker, but give a lot more grip and are considerably cheaper to buy.

So, if you don't mind more frequent visits to the tyre shop (at lower cost) then they might be worth a punt.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've been looking on the mytyres website at some of the suggestions. As an indication of price differences, for a single rear tyre they are charging the following:

Michelin PS2 - £251.40
Pirelli Rosso Assim - £207.40
Toyo Proxie T1R - £195.60 (fast wearing)
Goodyear Eagle F1 Assim - £173.50
Dunlop SP Sport 1 - £161.50
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 - £151
Falken 452 - £136.5

My experience of two sets of Dunlop fronts cracking up within 9 thousand miles each set, with lots of tread still left puts me off buying dunlops again.

The BMW problem of the front tyres wearing quickly on the outer edge is kind of putting me off going for the PS2s which would come in at £900 for a set. O/T Steve thanks for the offer, but by the time I collect from you, then try and find someone I trust locally who'll fit non supplied tyres for me, it's not worth it to me as I'll still be left paying £500+ for the two rears!

I think I'll be giving either the Pirellis or the Goodyear Assyms a go. I'll report back once I get round to changing. Tempting to see if I notice any difference with the cheaper Falkens though. I drove 1500 miles around northern Spain in a 98 528i on Falkens two years ago, they seemed to strike a great balance between wear rate and slideability. I am after all using the car solely as a road car. Hmmmmmm.

I run Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 and find they offer excellent grip and feel. I would definitely recommend them.

I've previously used Eagle F1s (GS-D3 and Asymmetrics) and ContiSport Contract 2 and 3 and have been happy with them all.

Update. Just called by my tyre dealers, couldn't get the Eagle assimetrics so I've ordered in the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s at a total cost of £540. Should be fitted friday in time for a bit of weekend "running in....."

Thanks for everyone's help.

Now I don't think £540 is bad for a set of tyres for a 400bhp car.
