I have a project that I am starting, being covered here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I will be using a 1.8T engine coupled to a transverse (TT/A3) quattro gearbox. My question is, does a diesel A3 have taller ratios/final drive than a petrol A3/TT?

If it does it will mean that I will be able to use 13" wheels and still have some sort of a top speed.

I can never remember whether taller means longer or what ever with gearbox ratios but I hope this is clear.

The diesel cars run at lower rpm for the same speed. In my (petrol) Bora the top gear is roughly 20mph/1000rpm in a diesel version it's about 25mph/1000rpm. So at 60mph my car is doing 3000rpm the diesel version is doing 2250(ish)rpm.

Taller = longer = more speed from less revs.
Also, yes diesels are generally geared taller than petrols.
