Marina Militare's
Discussion
Just wondering what people's thoughts were on these? Are they "homages" or are they a sub division of Panerai or even a brand in their own right?
I'd love a Pam but can't afford it and have spotted a few of the Marina's around but they seem to vary in price massively. Has anyone ever bought one and if so where from?
Are they made by one particular company/person or are they like all replicas and made by anyone who fancies it?

I was checking out the new stock on the chronomaster website the other day. He's just taken a titanium one in stock. Wants £175 for it. Many people on this forum have used him, so buying from him is recommended.
The watches are nothing to do with Panerai, and are known as a "homage".
If you like it, go for it.

I'd be a bit hesitant paying that much for an MM, as mentioned elsewhere in the thread there are various sources and the quality can vary depending on where it was made. The watches are nothing to do with Panerai, and are known as a "homage".

I also bought one as a Panerai sampler a few years ago. It was from an eBay seller called helenarou, who now appears to have an online shop at helenarou.com. The build quality is fine for the price but the lume is an awful yellow colour and very weak and the strap is rubbish. I wouldn't pay more than a hundred pounds for one of these.
Theres a huge thread on Watchuseek concerning the various homages and the built-to-spec watches from the various watchmakers on there appear to be a good bet if you want something unique with proper lume and a 'real' rather than knockoff movement. Also the dial won't carry any branding which is a bonus to me. I think someone called 'davidsen' was popular. Someone on PH had a custom one built with red and blue lume, it looked great.
Combine a custom MM to your spec with a nice vintage strap and it makes for a great casual knockaround watch without having to fork out 3k for a Panerai.
The difference between a fake Panerai and an "homage" one (such as an MM) is that the fake has "Panerai" on the dial and the "homage" has "Marina Militare".
All else is identical, or as close as makes no odds; the case is the same size and shape, the hands are the same, the font used for the numbers is the same.
My opinion is that an MM is a fake Panerai that doesn't have the gonads to write "Panerai" on the dial.

I understand where you're coming from, but would the Precista Pan-alike also be a fake? All else is identical, or as close as makes no odds; the case is the same size and shape, the hands are the same, the font used for the numbers is the same.

At a bit of a bash on saturday night,I,m at the bar when a old freind introduce me one of his long standing pals for a few minutes we stand talking about the weather, cars, weather, more cars all very politcally correct,it's still early, when the "pal" comes out with "nice watch is it real" as I hold my arm up to showoff what I think is going to put his mind at rest,I hear "it's a fake",lowering my arm fast, what makes you think that!the "pal" come out with "all Rolex subs had a bubble over the date" and showed me his, telling me he gave 1 and half for it, and not large ones, but a better fake than mine.As I walk back to my wife I say to her "I told you the sea dweller is quiet unassuming"

A Homage is a 'watch in the style of' those other watches are not 'in the style of' are they? They are exact copies just without Panerai on the front. The Precista Italian is another Panerai copy.
I think some of the other Precista watches possibly are homages, like the fifty fathoms a like one but the 'italian' is a copy watch. I doubt they would be so popular if there wasn't the TZ connection.

Burn him.

OK, cheers for all the replies and also for the websites.
It seems like there is a bit of a split in views! I would never normally buy consider buying a replica watch (rolex et al), but I think the "sterile" MM's look nice and aren't trying (too hard!) to be something they're not, so I may just take the plunge!
The custom built one's sound good, any idea of price on them? Does anyone know which PH'er had the one with the gorgeous sounding lume?

Of course - here's one not trying to look like a Panerai at all

Ahh, I see I may have opened up a bit of a hornets nest, sorry about that!

it's really easy
panerai have a patent and trademark on the crown guard
only watches made by panerai or with their permission can have the crown guard on
the fact that some of these watches even put pat. and tm, on the crown guard should tell you everything you need to know
it's getting harder and harder to find these fakes and very hard to buy them openly, because producing fakes is illegal, if you want a panerai, just buy one, the extra cost must be more then offset by continually trying to explain to people why you think it's not a fake, despite what the law says

Would you buy an exact copy of a Ferrari not stick the badges on and change the colurs and think it wasn't trying too hard? MMs are the definiton of trying too hard to be something their not. The cases are an exact replica of aunique and patented design. If you can convince yourself otherwise then fine but every time i looked at it i'd think i may as well have just had Panerai written on the dial becase at least i wouldn't be kidding myself. Would you like it if someone copied a great design you had fraudulently because they felt they could justify it due to your high prices?
I've got a MM sitting on my desk - I bought it from Ebay to see how I got on with the size before spending a few grand on a real Panerai as I just couldnt decide in the shop. I wore it for a day then decided it wasn't for me (nor was a real Panerai).
The quality is questionable - it is an auto but only a very cheap movement, but the case is very solid. It looks the part with the sandwich dial and lume. I might stick it in the classifieds for a few quid if there is interest in these.
