I Knew I shouldn't have , but ...

... I couldn't help it..
Found this when out looking for a second car,
"SUBARU Impreza Turbo 2000 4WD , 4 Doors, Manual, Saloon, Petrol, 1998 R Reg , 63,000 miles, Green. Insurance Group:17, *** THIS CAR IS AN INSURANCE CAT C REPAIRED *** a very eye catching Imprezza Turbo, not an import, 208bhp, Rear spoiler, lowered front bumper and splitter, bonnet scoop, bonnet pins, original black and grey cloth interior. £2,795 "
Drove it, seemed ok. Pulled to the right when lifting off, not excessively, but enough to notice. Slight smell of oil when I turned the fan on. Apparently its' only done 700 odd miles in the last year, had cam belts changed and a new clutch at Xmas 08. Incredibly loud, so the exhaust will probably have to go back to standard. Oil temp and pressure gauges on the centre of the dashboard ( an added extra by a previous owner I think) weren't working.
Good buy or good bye?

If you spend between £3,500-£4,000 on an unmolested classic scoob it's less likely you'll be buying a dog on it's last legs and more likely you'll be buying a half way decent machine with plenty of life left in it and scope for your own personal performance gaining mods.
Classic scoobs that come only with aftermarket dump valves and turbo timers that do feck all for performance are more likely to have been ragged to within an inch of their lives every single day of the week and are most likely to go bang not long after you bought it.
A classic scoob that comes with proper mods like full decat exhaust, tubular headers, cold air intake or high flow flat panel air filter and some remapping, aftermarket ECU or electronic boost controller is still likely to have been ragged but probably not as much, not everyday and not to within an inch of it's life. Somebody that has spent good money on expensive mods for their P&J is more likely to look after it. Either a totally unmolested example or properly well modified example is the way to go.
If you pay peanuts that's exactly what you'll get and less than £3K is definately peanuts.
