Before looking at the M3 i considered many cars, even considered the one i really wanted.. the 911 but dismissed it due to endless owners having serious issues with their engines.

I noticed Porkie owners don't think of the M3 as a performance car... they are almost snobbish about it!

Must admit that a 996 was on my shopping list before I went for the M3. For my budget, a great condition M3 made a much better choice than a more worn 996. I'd only have been able to afford an entry level car, and would have been unlikely to be able to have the choice of a preferable colour combo / spec. I drove a couple in-budget 996's, and the M3 is a much better car IMO.

If my budget were larger and I were able to be looking at a "proper" 996 like a GT3, then things could have been very very different.

Probably because they know Porsche make better cars generally

The m3's a good car and does many things well, but the 911 is better to drive and has more cachet.

My mate decided to make his dream come true and bought a 2002 996 with only 38000 miles on it. Dream did not last too long, A/C packed up, tip had a major leak porsche said new gearbox needed £8000. An indy put a seal in it for £1000. Shortly after the car suffered a catastrophic engine failure £8500! M3 or Iexus isf any day!

If you think they hate M3's dont mention the Nissan GT-R or Audi R8 (not to mention the love/hate TVR and Porsche Owners many battles).

Quite easy for Porsche cars to suffer such costly repair jobs... What would you rather do.. spend £8-12k on a new engine or go on holiday or do some house developments?

I dont see why you would want to cover the car with a porsche cover for £1100 a year? what the hell?

Also... i just found the Porker folks to really look down on M3 wannabes! Its like they think if you cant afford to waste good money then get a Lexus Is200?! they seem to have dim logic... i suppose thats why they buy 911's knowing full well the car has serious issues and then they go and pay £10k's on the car...

Your right with the BMW and Lexus comment! Its true... for £35k... a 2007 M3 with 15k on the clock or for £35k a 2004/5 911S with 30k on the clock that will need £1000's spend on it to keep it road worthy. I am sure BMW have issues... but Porsche have epic issues! Engine replacements??? Its like buying a good looking house and replacing the walls and roof because thats what has to be done?!

I went on the 911 site to hear good stories from 911 owners but ended up running out with my tail between my legs...

I'll stick to the BMW... thanks ;-)

I think you'll find that a huge proportion of 911 owners came from M3's and have a huge amount of respect for them. I know I do. How many people in your post said they'd owned both!

Unfortunately what you actually did was start a thread telling EXISTING owners that there cars are massively unreliable and they are stupid to own one. Missed the bit where you actually asked for advice unless you started a different thread.....

Nobody is saying yhe beemer is a st choice. People were questioning you're research! Ultimately running costs and reliability between the 2 are nigh on identical. The cars are like brothers. People who love 911's tend to love M3's also and vice versa.

Why you're trying to start some kind of brand war is beyond me. To me you come across as a childish dhead, which is a shame really as it sounds like you're on a position to buy a quality motor.

Maybe ask people about the reliability of there cars next time instead of telling them, when you've never actually run anything vaguely similar......

lol.. thanks for your comments!

i am not really looking for a brand war! i was just interested why 911 owners were so stuck up their own rear...

I dont think the cost of ownership of an M3 is anywhere near the cost of a 911!

I realise a lot of 911 owners progress from M3 to the 911.

Lol i may have approached the thread wrong... but if someone posted something on the Honda section and said 'S2000 are mechanically rubbish and i would never buy one'.. i dont think people would try around and say go buy a Ford Ka or a IS200 or something worse. I find them Porker owners quite defensive...

I posted a thread on here asking for M3 owners to state issues with their M3... had such a positive response.. try that on a 911 forum...!!!!

Anyway.. learnt by mistakes... shall not be doing that again. Going to Stick to BMW.

The 996 has some serious RMS issues. The E36 has equally big Vanos problems. The E46 needed recalling after several engine replacement issues. Go onto mtorque and check out ianm3's post - his engine blew a few months ago.

It's the quality of your research and argument that is lame.

For whatever reason you've concluded that all porkers are fundamentaly flawed. If you posted the same on this forum about m3's I'd still call you a dhead!

I'm sure there are dheads in both camps. Many of us have a healthy respect for both.

I really must assure you that the running costs are almost identical.

I can tell you that from experience.

Stupid post.

There are some c0cks driving 911s. There are some c0cks driving M3s.

What a pointless thread.

FWIW the M3 is a beautiful car.

Probably in there checking the fluid levels of their engines so they don't suffer an "Epic failure" wink
