Wheel recommendations (Mavic Crossrides?)

Hi,

My current wheels are Mavic D521's on (old) LX hubs with DT spokes. I use my bike for street, jumps, freeride, rides in the peak district, pretty much everything if you get what I mean.

Whilst the current wheels are still pretty true, and the rims ok, the hubs are getting very tired so I thought I'd put the wheels on my pub/work bike that I'm building up from an old frame and replace the wheels on my current bike.

A quick look on the internet reveals ChainReaction doing both Mavic Crossrides for £124.99/pair and Mavic XM317's with XT Disc hubs for £109.99/pair. Has anyone got any experience of either of these or any other recommendations?

I'd like something a bit lighter than my current wheels, but could use a decent width rim as I like to run 2.35" tyres and the wider rims tend to help with tyre roll (I only tend to run 30psi ish). Some disc friendly hubs would be good to as I'd like to change my Magura rim brakes for discs at some point.

I don't really want to spend too much either...

I have a 317 on XT rear on the commencal and its quite nice, the front is a commencal hub on a 317 and seems fairly nice and accurate too to be honest so i can recommend the 317 but a friend as 717s on his stumpy and they are very nice. 317s appear to be not best suited to jumps and freeride stuff though so you might be best looking at something abit more burly or realistically working out how much time you actually spend doing jumps etc as an xc wheel they are pretty good.

dt swiss stuff is bombproof but expensive.

have a look at what merlin can offer as they have a reputation for good wheels.

Crossrides are okay wheels but they're fairly low down the food chain at Mavic.

Whilst they're great for everyday & trail riding, I don't think I'd trust them for jumping etc.

Oh, and the QR skewers they come with are terrible; they keep coming undone. If you do get a pair, swap the skewers out asap.

I had a front Crossride that lasted about a year before I killed it in a crash. The matching rear lasted about 18 months - 2 years before a spoke pulled through the hub, rendering the whole thing useless and beyond economic repair. Mind you, I'm a big-ish chap and not very easy on my kit!

Also note that Mavic rims ending in "17" are 17mm wide, so you might want to go for something -19 or -21 if you want to run wider tyres.

I've got Crossrides on my trail/all mountain setup and consider them the weak link on the bike. They're adequate and do the job but there's a fair bit of flex in them and they just don't feel very solid in general. On my other bike I have some Merlin handbuilt Mavic D521's on XT which are still solid as a rock after 5+ years and thousands of miles (although not much hard use but still...) The Crossrides came on the bike, but I'll always buy handbuilt from somewhere that knows what they're doing over "factory" wheels. I'm looking at getting some Merlin built Mavic 521/721's on XT, cheapish and longevity/reliabilty of XT.

edit - not 721 actually as they are non-disc, can't get my head around all the numbers

Not had any crossrides but friends have and they've bent them on xc stuff so would steer away. They are attractive due to weight but i'd go for a Mavic 719 or DT 5.1 rim and Hope xc or Chris King hub, but due to the credit crunch some XT's if they do the combo!?!?

I've got a set of the new EN521's built onto pro2's and I'm loving 'um! Spin up much quicker than my old rims did on the same hubs and stayed completely true after a crash that cracked the sub-frame on my enduro.

Pro2's are, as ever, brilliant. I've heard of some failing due to a bad batch and some people seem very concerned about the noise, but there's simply more to life than what noise a hub makes. Use them on my dh bike as well and they're bullet proof.

How about the Hope Hoops Pro2 on a DT5.1? £269/pair from CR.

I've only ever had Mavic's so not sure on a DT rim?
