I think Don got quoted about £4k for retro fitting a system to his Boxster S.

A few companies now do Din Sized CD head units with built in Sat Nav. Another option is to do web searches on Navman and Garmin, both of these companies do mobile satnav units that can be moved from car to car.

Wow £4k is expensive - I thought the Blaupunkt and/or Becker units are sub £1k (self fitment).

£4k was for the complete nav TV screen unit thing that normally costs about £1,800 when you spec the car for building.

Becker do a variety of units from about £600 upwards.

Yeo - I have a Becker TrafficPro fitted to my GT2. Was fitted by a stereo literate friend of mine, but just replaces the stock radio in the DIN slot. Does need the GPS antenna fitting in the dash though.

As for price:

Buy a Porsche TrafficPro from Porsche for about £2,200, or buy the exact same unit from Becker (with a different badge) for £1,200 retail, or pay £700-800 on the internet..........

Guy

PS it works a treat and has the same nav software as the PCM system, but without the big flash screen.

Daz /Guy - thx for the feedback.
I've just done a i/net search - there a few up on eBay including a new Becker Highspeed sat/nav currently bid at £760 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2447888756&category=15329

Also found it retail for £1k at www.incardiscount.co.uk/acatalog/Shop_Becker_Navigation___CD_Changer_80.html[/url}

I use the Garmin Streetpilot III. It works a treat and is moveable between cars. Comes with:

1. Beanbag mount that stays where it is on the dash unless you're doing some extreme cornering
2. Permanent mount
3. Semi-permanent sticky pad for permanent mount.

I used to have the beanbag mount on the dash of my RS and successfully used it to mavigate from Spa to the Porsche centre in Aachen, which was easily in the database. The semi-permanent mount is glued onto the dash of my Golf.

If you can cope with some trailing wires into cigarette sockets, it's an excellent system and ONE EIGHTH the cost of the Becker unit at around £500 street price these days. To my mind the ability to move it between cars and plug it into a PC to upload specific routes and maps outweighs the less professional appearance of something plonked onto your dashboard with trailing wires into a cigarette socket.

Peter,

How is £500 for a Garmin one-eighth of the £700 I paid for the Becker TrafficPro?

I know my maths is not the best, but I think I'm right on this one.......

When looking for car stereo stuff I've always found the following companies a good place to start.

www.caraudiodiscount.com
www.incarexpress.co.uk
www.hendoncarstereo.co.uk

Also give www.kelkoo.com a go when you know what model you want.

I put an Alpine 1-DIN satnav unit in my 993. With the MP3-capable 6-CD changer, the total was just over a G from Edworthy's. V helpful people, btw.
