can anyone tell me how road tax works in france?

what you need to get it, i.e insurance etc., and where you go to get it?

There is no road tax in France.



(There used to be road tax according to engine horse power but this was stopped 2-3 years ago)

Dunno, but the Vehicle Excise Licence (VEL) doesnt fund the roads here either, it just goes in the big pot. The Road Fund Licence (RFL) was abolished in 1961.
