iPod connection?

I'd have suggested www.comand.co.uk, but they are in Surrey, so possibly a bit far for you. Alternatively they could supply the unit for a local specialist to fit.
That price sounds about right from a main dealer, I got quoted £350 from an independant outlet. The parts on there own are about £200.
It may be cheaper to just retrofit the aux connection rather than the entire iPod kit, as the AUX harness costs £50 tops and gives you a 3.5mm input in your glovebox. The disadvantage of this kit is you can't control the iPod through the steering wheel etc, but its obviosuley a lot cheaper and easier to DIY fit than the proper iPod interface.

The (old) merc integrated kit is a bit pooh. The interface although well integrated with the rest of the car (steering wheel controls + comand/audio 20) lacks any other features other than playing random songs on one massive play list.
If the clean install is something your after & are happy with the poor amount of control over your i pod then that's ok, but you want to have a bit more control I personally would go with some after market FM transmitter with the ability to charge.
Depending on the age an 203 I'm assuming, the i pod isn't difficult to fit either if your mechanically OK. It's literally un plugging adding switching around some multi plugs on the back of the COMAND unit and routing some wires through to the glovebox, whilst mounting a box to the bulkhead. However merc now do a multimedia interface kit on the newer 204s which adds sat nav + i pod control... nice bit of kit but comes with a price.

Get a Parrot MKi9000. I have one in my Land Rover and it works really well. Bluetooth too.
