My girlfriend wants to detour over and spend a few days in the Dales on the way back from seeing the (prospective) inlaws in a few weeks. I haven't been to that side of Yorkshire since I was about 10 and I wondered if anyone could recommend anywhere nice (either places to visit, areas to stay or specific hotels)?

We don't have a huge amount of money so it'll be more the pub/BnB/farmhouse end of the spectrum I suppose (say £50 a night) but somewhere with a bit of character that either serves, or is close to a source of, good food and beer would be an advantage.

Any thoughts? smile

I'd look for places near Ingleton for the western side or Settle and Giggleswick a bit further east.

Is there a change in landscape from east to west or anything? We'll be coming from York and return to London, so I guess east is marginally easier, but it's hardly a deciding factor.

Current thoughts are somewhere like one of these:

Think I would prefer somewhere that does food (a pub with a few rooms or something), but a cottage might be a possibility if there's a pub nearby or something.

I'm thinking unashamedly olde worlde with exposed beams, good food and a buxom wench serving real ale so rustic it comes with twigs in. Or maybe some Black Sheep.

Near that place is the "Street Head Inn". Pretty good food and walking distance.

But the whole area is FILLED with "pubs with rooms"

Possibly a bit far west, but I found these to be good.

sorry i cant recommend a hotel as i usually camp, but i know there are b&b's and small hotels in appletreewick. It is a tiny place in the dales near bolton abbey (which is great and worth a visit) there are two quality local boozers, and you could also go to or stay in grassington.

Kettlewell? There's 3 pubs, all of which do rooms. A tea room and a village shop. It's in the middl of Wharfedale, so fairly central and handy for Grassington, Burnsall, Hawes etc.
Things to do - walking, wensleydale factory at Hawes, Bolton Abbey, Skipton Castle.

Will do! That said, I'll be in the daily driver with my girlfriend wimpering if I drive enthusiastically. Can at least reccie it for another occasion I guess!

So far it's down to the Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw or the Craven Arms near Appletreewick. Hmm, the 'child friendly' sign slightly puts me off the latter, looks nice though!

Living in area I would agree with the suggestions of Appletreewick and Burnsall. Personally I think Burnsall is the nicer, the Red Lion is a decent pub with accommodation. It has a great setting overlooking the river. The Devonshire fell is another option.

If your in the area, the Angel Inn at Hetton is definitely worth eating at. Fantastic food, not the cheapest but very highly recommended.

I agree with the above - and having lived in Wharfedale all of my life I guess we all develop our favourites smile

...the OP is on a budget.

Red Lion has gone a bit downhill in the last year from it's previous excellence and can be pricey. Definately avoid if tehy have a wedding party booked in, the food goes right off. They have also stopped doing "locally reared/shot/caught" and seem to be more generic.
Angel good but again, not an inexpensive night
Tenant Arms at Kilnsey is another option - but again probably over budget for accommodation, but food good (especially teh portion sizes)
Malham good for the Buck and the Lister Arms plus several B&B options
Kettlewell pretty but can't recall a good meal there
Buckden also nice, but limited options

And as for a drive, well the Otley>over teh tops>A59>Skipton>Kettlewell>Buckden>Cray>Wensleydale>Horton>Skipton loop would be a favourite.

I can recommend this place The Priory Guesthouse in Middleham and if it is still being run by Rachael and Tony then the food is excellent (I'm not sure if they have sold it yet or not). Lots of good eating places in the area and a great base for walking, driving, sightseeing etc.

Thanks. The Lister Arms caught my eye, will google the others.

The budget isn't a major issue - it's just I'm not looking for the 'Michelin-starred luxury country house hotel' type thing that some of the more well-heeled PHers can stretch to. smile
