I wish I knew a little more about cars. My tidy E34 with 70k miles went for an MOT today. God I hate MOTs.

The local indy wants to charge me £330 + VAT for fixing the below:

One front side wheel bearing
One lambda sensor
One tyre

I'm thinking I could probably get the tyre a lot cheaper than they want to charge me. What about the other bits? Is that price reasonable or am I being fleeced? I thought lambda sensors were around the £50 mark. Thanks in advance..

Depends: for the tyre, try www.blackcircles.com for a quote, so you know if that's close. Then try a normal garage for the rest; the indie should be able to get the parts at a reasonable rate, but will also know how much to factor in for PITA time - older cars can prove more difficult to dismantle, & he may well know something's in the way which will also need replacing, or something will be rusted to hell. Check what hourly rate he's charging. See what you end up with.

As above, find out how much of thats labour. Parts wise I would have thought £200.

I've got a spare lambda sensor off a 325i (same M50B25 engine) you can have for £20 inc P&P, pm me if you're interested.
