The world of IT is severely over-crowded.

We have the natural born nerds who avoided their teenage social life for online gaming/ hacking/ want for free porn.

The trained IT "business man," who took on a nice mickey mouse course at uni, £22k debt and a half dead liver.

Then we have the middle-aged career changer; who with their wisdom of life, regret of past events and more ambition than a very ambitious person, will study like crazy to achieve their certified credentials in hope for the elusive pay 'As seen on TV'

Just my thoughts; but think long and hard about investing mass sums of money into a trade which, in my opinion, is stupidly over-crowded.

Better still, have a browse through the IT jobsites to get a feel for what's out there.
example: jobserve.co.uk - do a search for ALL IT jobs, at ANY rate, within a 40-mile radius of your hometown.

I'm washing my hands with IT - I'm being under-cut left, right and centre.
Been enjoying the thread about becoming a train driver.... Choo! Choo! hehe

Totally agree with everything you said, unfortunately for me I’m colour blind so train driving is a no no so I’m stuck in I.T for now.

I’ve managed to do okay by specialising in certain applications and building up experience over the past 10 years in the industry. Few people who work in I.T. make more than 30k nowadays, and because the market is so cutthroat once you do get a job don’t expect to be rewarded. In a previous job I managed a large network of 10 servers and 150 pc’s and was basically responsible for everything with a plug, I was paid less than the forklift drivers.

My tip is if you’re looking to earn 37k in I.T. then give yourself a 10 year window to do so and be prepared to start low (12k low) and move jobs ever 2/3 years, believe me there are recent graduates willing to work for free just to get experience on their CV!! Alternately, look for another career, sometimes I wish I had!

This topic has been covered a few times here.

No. Adverts like those give the impression that IT is this mythical place where geeks get paid huge sums to play solitaire.

It's not like that.

The only way you'll get rich from IT is by selling worthless training courses to guilable people!

If I was looking for some easy money right now, I would be looking very closely at jobs with words like 'Low Carbon', 'Sustainable' or 'Green' in the title.

Its pretty clear that whoever gets in at the next election, there is going to be some easy (taxpayers) money up for grabs. Its my belief that over the next 5 years, the 'Green Bubble' will be the place to be!

Expect to go to a lot of interviews for your £15k job too. You will be consistently overlooked in favour of people with experience. Many employers would see a Cerco/Advent type course as a distinct disadvantage (me included).

Take out IT Directors, consultants, and people who lie on salary surveys and the salary average will be closer to £25k. As a support techie it will take you at least 10 years to even get a sniff at £38k.
