I give you Hannibal.

So much going for it,

Anthony Hopkins
Julie-ann Moore
Ridley Scott
Ray Liotta

And they completely cocked it up. 100%. They ruined the ending completely and the rest of the film didn't inspire me much either.

Coming after Silence of the Lambs, it was always going to have high expectations, but they turned out some total dross.

Poor effort. 1.5/10

Starship Troopers
Dune
The Minority Report
I Robot

Pretty much every Sci-Fi book turned into a film is rubbish compared to the book.

I will rant at anyone that says "The Beach."

I'm reading the Bond books by Ian Fleming at the moment, the films, particularly the Roger Moore ones are very different.

I had to say different, because I love the Roger Moore films for their daftness, and because I grew up watching them on Bank Holidays with my Dad.

The books are completely different, and also very good.

Sphere, really good read, Dustin Hoffman in the film.....crap, so much missing.

After my son and I saw the film, I recommended he read the book, which he did, and agreed with my original comment, carp film.

Good plot though................ they find a space ship on the ocean floor, been there around 300 years, and they find out "Made in America".....

blood work - the clint eastwood film that even he could not save .
the book by michael connelly is superb and very different.
there are rumours that there will be a film version of the poet by connelly - no doubt they'll make a mess of that great book as well.

Here goes...

The Beach as a book is pretty well written, in such a way that you have a view of what you think the setting / paradise is actually like. Instead of telling you what the place is like, you're left to fill in parts of it yourself. As such, the location in my mind is different from what you see in your mind.

When you watch the film, you are seeing paradise as the director sees it. Since it's different to how you pictured it in your head, you think it's a crap film. It's not, it's just someone else's view.

(He should never have shagged her though, didn't happen in the book, shouldn't have happened in the film.)

I'll admit it's been a long while since reading or watching The Beach but my memory is that there were massive plot differences between book and film.
