OK this one has me TOTALLY stumped. It may be nothing, or it may be something. I have no idea what though!

Driving along last night, I put the heater on for the first time. After a while I noticed a weird gurgling / bubbling sound coming from the NS footwell area (I thought). I thought 'damn' hot air blower down there, maybe there is some sort of leak or something and shut off the fan. It was a very weird noise, nothing for a 2 minutes, then 10 seconds of a weird noise. Braking/accelerating didn't seem to affect it. I found it hard to replicate, basically it was random.

A few miles down the road (heater now off) it did it again. Werid thought I. Had one idea and tested the nearside window button - managed to get it to lift another 1cm or so - seemed to stop the noise and never heard it again after that - maybe the window rubbing on the rubber made the funny noise/ wind noise.

Anyway, at that point I thought it was just a weird quirk of that window being slightly open. Then the spooks decended once again......

50mph, 5th gear - neutral throttle. Almighty clunk, apparently from NS rear area (sounded a bit like a seized brake disk disengaging - though it definitely wasn't)

W T F???

Pull over, stop engine, look under. see nothing. [Throught all the time I'd had a beedy eye on oil&water temp as I wondered if I had a coolant leak, as it happens after checking this AM I definitely do not.]. Give wheels a wiggle, fine.

Restart engine. Rock forwards, back, test brakes. Drive on, wiggle wheel to slalom, car feels fine. Stops fine, rolls fine, all gear selection fine (wondered if it could have been clutch/gearbox related, apparently not). Wondered if it was maybe the diff bracket snapping (weird time for it to do so under no load), but there is no apparent backlash in the drive, the car sounds and feels 100% fine.

I thought it may have been a snapped coilspring, so jacked up this am, and..... all looks fine.

I'm absolutely stumped as to what this noise could have been. It sounded serious, but I can see absolutely nothing indicative of anything awry. The only thing I can think of is something like the LSD plates releasing or something? (non hydratrack on mine, and no idea if this makes any sort of mechanical sense/possibilty).

I'm absolutely baffled as to what it was. It sounds, looks, feels as it did before, levels are as they should be on oil&coolant.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm almost 100% it came from the car, there was nothing I hit on the road I don't think! This, coupled with the weird gurgling is totally bizarre. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Stu

EDIT: Oh yeah, I did have a 23Kg jack in the boot, it *could* have maybe fallen forward and bounced on the fuel tank - which is the only thing I can currently think of. If the two noises ring any bells to anyone else though I'd like to hear. Just the noises were so weird as to feel somehow connected. I'm booked into andy @ APM next week though, so as long as it can make it down there I should be alright, but if there is something treacherous I should be looking for/inspecting, I'd rather know now than before a 150mile trip!

You'd run over a cat that had got caught under your car. The strange noise you heard every now and then was its last gasps of life. The clunk you heard was it departing from your car and finding its final resting place.

itsallyellow, OK, interesting that they can do that. Maybe that's just what it was?

Jammy, there is something furry ontop of one of my undertrays that I saw, seriously. I thought it maybe a mouse or something that has cooked. I need to get it out smile I'll be sure to take photos biggrin

Stu have you taken the family size fire extinguisher out of the boot? That used make an almighty clonk when it moved around, lol!

The drivers window thing not closing properly - scared the crap out of me when i took my mate out at a "goodly" speed the noise it made had me stamping on the brakes immediately! Turned out it was a where the window hadn't properly sealed against the rubber - the noise really was quite unbelievable I kid you not. Opened the window a tad and bingo - sorted. You're in the same mode I was after buying it listening out for every noise - the car really is good and hopefully Andy'll put your mind at rest. Don't panic! You'll have no trouble getting down to Andys. Ask Andy about the drivers seal - I don't remember properly but I'm sure he said it was a later one which was thicker than the early ones hence the window having more of an interference fit.

My diff sometimes makes a noticable clunk, normally at very slow speeds if parking or something and I've just had it refurbished, it did the same before the refurb also.
Its worth having a quick look at the rear diff mount as these have a tendency to break, mine used to creak before it gave up properly. While your there have a look at the diff mount bushes, two at the front, one in the rear mount

New posh Jack

Inspect

BBQ

Jammybarseward may have been close to the mark I guess?

Anyway, managed to pull a BBQ'd rabbits foot out of an undertray. I'm still not sure if it was Jack/ fire extinguisher, or rabbit, or weird window rubber rubbing. Nonetheless I went for a shakedown drive today and all seems well. I'll ask andy to have a good look@ diff mounts though, as I'm still not 100% sure I'm able to just forget the "noise". smile

I spent a lot of time on the car today, changed the big fuse (mission due to previous bodge.... grr), topped up DI water in batt, fully recharged, got the cig lighter wired in & working again + fitted my 2ndary air fan (not powered yet, will be imminently), checked 'idle' current draw (almost zero, so hopefully with the refreshed batt and new big fuse it will be happier stood for days on end smile). Anyway, was very impressed with myself to get lots done and apparently not break any of the ribbon connectors in the dash, which looks easy to mess up!

Still very very weird though, maybe having the pax window slightly ajar meant that I could hear the final death throws of a bunnywabbit bouncing off the road with it's paw lodged in the undertray?

Scott,

smile I thought I'd not directly pester you on this one, figure it was time to free you of responsibility!! Interesting that the window made a biazrre noise for you too, it may well have been that - putting the window up seemed to stop it instantly (whereas slowing/braking/accel/turning seemed to have no direct impact). It's not been replicated since, if it happens again I'll try the window 1st thing to see if it stops it again. Incidentally the brake squeel seems to have all but subsided now - I need to play around a bit more (I've been easy on brakes), but think I may be able to leave as-is - despite finding some anti-squeel pads that I could fit. I'll see if I think they need them or not, but they have certainly calmed down 90%.... which can only be a good thing for the local dog population!

Finally got my ISo connector for stero install too, will fit soon, but fan more important as I'm on slow roast myself atm. Looking forward to given it a full polish&wax, but not managed to find the time yet!

Cheers,

Stu
