Hi guys,
I had a chat to an OPC today about a 2001 Y Boxster S they have for sale. It has 31,000 miles.
It is met. black with full black leather and sports seats (heated electric). It has a wind deflector, OBC, CDR-22, Turbo wheels.
It is up for 29,995.
I have cash in the bank, and I could "put it on switch" so I suppose I am in the best position to negotiate a good price, especially considering the time of year.
I live 250 miles away from the car. The salesman said we could negotiate the price on the phone and then I could collect it almost immediately.
What would you offer? Would you start very low and then meet him "half way"?
I would be very grateful for your advice.

If its from an OPC its not a bad price as it is. They usually seem to have between 5K and 7K in a boxster (not sure about this one though). I sold a 99 (V) 2.7 privately in May for 26.5K with 43,000 miles (and kojaks on the back!),so the seasonal trend applies...

I`d bid silly at around 26K but assuming its got all the warranty I`d be happy to get 1/2 grand off.

Thanks,
Blimey.....I'd want more than half a grand off. They must have a 5 grand margin on this car. I don't want to give them more than 28K. Is this reasonable bearing in mind I am a cash buyer and it's christmas!?

Sorry, meant 1 to 2 grand off!

£28K for this car fully prepared from a pukka dealer would be a good deal.

Maybe, you can work some extras into the deal like extended warranty or servicing,,,do try to resist the offers of Toni & Guy vouchers to close the deal

The Boxter S is a great car, you will love it !
Go get yourself a copy of Top marques (or last weeks Sunday Times) & phone a few OPC buyers for a trade valuation on the car (I would guess at £24-25k) then you will know the true margin. It is a good price from a garage, presumably because of the mileage, but do check it is a Uk or C16 car, a few OPC's will sell non C16 (UK spec). Also check it is an 01 model year production car, as the spec was upgraded (to include some nice things like being able to release both boot lids with the keyfob & a nicer steering wheel etc)

Looking at the spec the one thing that seems to be missing is the sound pack, the standard stereo is pretty crap, so if it hasn't got one this is the extra negotiation I would go for. I believe OPC's have an "expensive" upgrade they can offer. But I wouldn't expect much of the sticker price, they will sell it easily at that price, maybe £1k if you are lucky !
Let us know how you get on.

Yes I sold the Sport Evo. Very sad to let it go, it was a demon on the track. I need something more comfy now, the Boxster S covers most bases I think.

Thanks mate.
I'm one of those blokes that tracks prices in Top Marques all the time....very sad I know. In fact, all my mates do this as well. It provides all the pub bore talk you could want.....eg "I say, those GT3 mark 1's are coming down in price aren't they?" etc etc.
I think this car suits me fine. It does have the sound pack (CDR-22). The only 2 things it's missing are PSM and PCM, but I'm not bothered about either. It is a UK car. I don't know if it's a 2001 spec or not. I agree that the trade price is probably somewhere around the 25K mark.
I went to my local OPC this lunchtime and they didn't have any in that suited me. They are trying to find me one. They wouldn't have it that the other dealer would have a 5 grand margin. They were saying more like 3K before haggling. I doubt that.
I think I will negotiate a deal on the black one.

They'll move on the price for a cash buyer. But I think getting 1K off is the max. And don't expect that 1K off and then a host of other things thrown in.

Personally I'd pay the asking price but ask for:

New mats.
Full warranty with Porsche Assistance for TWO years (not the one they'll give you free). The extra year is worth £800.

Don't think you'll get any more than that...

I HAVE BOUGHT IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheesh, I am a happy camper.

I got it for 29K on the nose, which I think is great for an OPC. I'm picking it up on Saturday. Holy crap, I can't wait.

Thanks for all your advice, chaps.

Enjoy !

Always loved the handling of the Boxster S - a great piece of kit.

I am too tall for one, however, if only the seat went back a couple more inches..

Enjoy! I guarantee you'll love it. Its the only car that I have ever bought - and then when the time came for renewal I just bought another exactly the same...

Well not exactly but you know what I mean....

So - join the PCGB and come along to some of the Track Days - and I'll see you there...

Thanks chaps.
I will be joining the PCGB. I'll probably keep in the BMWCCGB as well because their track days are good.
Actually I can't wait to see how the car performs on the track. I'm used to a tricked-up Motec'd E30 M3 Sport Evo with cage etc.....it was almost a racing car. I suspect that the Boxster S will lap just as quickly, their power-to-weight ratios are the same after all.

It's worth saying that I have found this forum very helpful when I've thought about buying a Porsche. I have contributed every now and again whilst still running M3's. I'll hopefully see some of you at track days in the future.
