so loads of pubs are closing - why is this - is it all to do with tax? I cant say they help themselves why dont they sell:

proper coffee with a choice of them - ie an instore starbucks type service
freshly squeezed juices and smoothies not some britvic wk
cheaper beer - if weatherspoons can sell it for 99p a pint why does it cost £4 elsewhere?
comfy sofas / papers / fresh snacks etc

is it the breweries that are signing their own death warrant or does beer really need to be that expensive? reasons / ideas? would be a mare if they all shut.

stespoons have no music so that is not paid for.... they dont need to hire the best staff as the scum only visit.... only place I know that will quite happily serve you a quadruple whrey and nephew with coke and not care if you pass out from the alcohol vapour alone.

But that just sounds like a coffee shop?

Pubs are closing for all manner or reasons, not least that Supermarkets sell alchohol immensely cheap so people spend more time drinking at home then they do down the pub.

because you can't drive there and you can't smoke and pretty soon you won't be able to drink either

Wetherspoons can do that for the moment. They have huge buying power.

Pubs don't make much on a pint.

Gaming Machine Licence
Licence for Music
Cost of alcohol (aka bank robber Browns thieving tax)
Cost of rent to Breweries
Smoking ban

All these add up, a lot are struggling.

Another problem is that many of them have decided to stay in the past. A adore real ale, but there are no modern, clean pubs which serve real ale, so I drink that at home.

\/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/\/ \/ \/ \/ - blame this cretin

He doesn’t use one and has no understanding of how communities work - hence legislating and taxing pubs into oblivion . . . . . . . . . at first I thought it was part of his grand Marxist plan (remove native community, then introduce state controlled alternative into the resultant vacuum),
then I came to understand that it’s just a lack of common sense and understanding and another bloody good reason why regime change needs to happen in England never mind Rhodesia

Pub near me has just gone bust, its just a small town centre pub,but I'm told the rent is £100,000 PA. plus staff costs, heating & lighting etc. Rates.

Its a wonder there's any left with rents that high.

a friends mum has a pub its been making a loss for the last year or so, great food, great drink just hasnt got the customers.

its now been sold and she has to be out the first week of jan as its now going to be flats.

from memory the brewery apart from dropping the rent slightly have been quite a arse and havent helped themselves, so she now buys drink from the local cash and carry and sells from under the bar she herself makes money so why cant the brewery do this ????? crazy

I can pop to my corner shop and buy five pints for a fiver. I take them home where I can sit on a comfy sofa, smoke to my heart's content (irony), listen to the music I like, watch what I want to watch on TV (ie not sport), invite round people I know and like and want to talk to and (usually) not run the risk of being punched, glassed and/or stabbed.

Seriously, why the hell would I want to go to a pub?

The freeholders take the piss (rent).
The breweries take the piss (prices).
The government takes the piss (tax, and smoking ban).

The poor publican is not so much "between a rock and a hard place" as "being stoned from all directions".
