VW Approves Porsche Take Over

VW to assimilate Porsche, but HQ will stay in Stuttgart

Will the next Golf GTI feature 'tuning by Porsche' badges? Probably not, but an agreement by the VW board to rescue the debt-ridden Porsche car business definitely opens up possibilities for close co-operation.

Talks are due to start immediately between the two companies about how to begin the integration process, says VW, although it has confirmed Porsche will retain its independence and its Stuttgart HQ.

A statement from VW's chairman Martin Winterkorn after yesterday's meeting to approve the takeover, suggests the two companies will be looking carefully at ways to reduce costs.

'The envisaged union of Volkswagen and Porsche follows a compelling industrial logic and offers promising perspectives: it makes two strong companies even stronger. Volkswagen and Porsche have excellent know-how at their disposal and can use their resources even more efficiently by combining them,' he says

'For this reason, we expect additional growth opportunities, safeguarding existing jobs and creating new ones. At the same time, we can call on our considerable experience in the integration of proud and successful brands rich in tradition.

'Like Audi today, Porsche can also continue its independent development under the aegis of Volkswagen and preserve its own identity. We have great respect for the achievements of the Porsche workforce and are convinced that Porsche can enrich the Volkswagen Group – just as Volkswagen can vice versa enrich Porsche.'

Seems that it has all backfired for Porsche.

Both make great cars at their respective levels so I am sure this is only going to end up in lots more toys that we want to play with!

Porsche tweeked GTI could be very interesting, though keep the badges seperate!

I wonder what influence will be made over Audi, Bentley & Lambo???

"Retaining its independence like Audi"... so that means platform and engine-sharing for 99.9% of its range...

Would be good to see some VW products 'breathed on' my Porsche as per the Audi RS2.

Sure they liven up the ride and handling of some VW's.

Wonder if there'll be a tipping point where we suddenly end up with a 'German Leyland'?

Component sharing will only annoy the badge snobs.

Totally subjective and few apologies for it, but that has really f*****d it for me. Companies seeking cost cutting, rarely serves to enhance the integrity of something as emotive as an icon. Two strong companies becoming stronger through assimilation and dilution, much like like water and juice concentrate one may imagine, palatable to many, without retaining the original ethos. Am I sad? Certainly. Surprised? Sadly not. God bless you Porsche you will be mourned. Welcome Vporsche Wagen.

I don't understand this, tbh. Porsche own 51% of VW and were set to take over VW. Now suddenly VW are taking over Porsche.

Can someone explain this to me please?

It would appear that this has been Ferdinand Piëchs plan all along. Its Piëchs legacy. It all depends on how much you believe what VW & Porsche say. Porsche got themselves into €10bn worth of debt while chasing VW shares. Even though the VW law is still in place so they wouldn't have voting control. There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
VW & Porsche co-operate to a greater degree than is publicly known anyway, so from a product perspective its not going to change much. In the long term, it has to be a good thing.

Its all completely daft. Not 6 months ago Porsche were poised to buy 75% of VW Group and were to acquire "domination" rights over Porsche. Now Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech - great nephew of Ferdinand Porsche - jumps in and sacks his old enemy Wiedeking. Its all family politics if you ask me. Porsche is or was a family run business. How will they fare in it. Do we really care. Now here comes the platform sharing....anyone fancy a Porsche Eos for 25K.

I thought it was the Porsche holding company who were trying to buy VW, and this is VW buying the Porsche motor company? So not really a direct comparison.

Lamborghini seem to have done OK under VW ownership without excessive platform sharing.

Don't forget we've had VW Porsches for some time already with the Cayenne/A7/Touareg.

Of the many moans about the Cayenne, relatively few were that it shared much with sister VAG group cars - mostly that Porsche made a pigs ear of the styling......not that the VAG cars are actually much better.

Platform sharing where it makes sense doesn't need to be a problem.

In some ways I'm pleased that it's ended up this way round. If Porsche had owned VW, what would the future of Lamborghini and Bentley be like? At least with VW owning Porsche, Porsche can't find ways of ditching the other makes.

I'm not really thinking it's going to make a massive difference to anything - platform sharing, brand closures etc wether it was Porsche buying VW or VW buying Porsche. Things I think would follow a similar course.

As for parts sharing, lots of Porsche parts have fit VW vehicles for decades with minimal fuss, from dropping 911 engines into Camper Vans to now fitting Porsche brakes to a Seat Leon.

Hell, even the ECUs must be remarkably similar just look at how you Remapping companies always develop VW/Audi/Seat/Porsche at the same time but not Toyota/Vauxhall/Ford/Whatever.

I'd say they've been the same company in all but name for a long long time.

Can't see the German government letting that ever happen. If if you and I as Europeans end up paying for it.

Despite the success of Audi, ownership of Porsche by VW will seriously devalue the Porsche brand in the mind of potential buyers.

It's a shame that the two men responsible for bringing Porsche to it's kneees left with so much money in their pockets.

The amount they were given makes Fred Goodwin's payoff look positively modest
