Two Stories in the news today, first, Boris Johnson is removing bendy buses! Woo hoo! They are an utter menace in my opinion. How anyone can argue in thier favour is beyond me. They take up so much bloody road, straddle two lanes wherever they go and are really dangerous for bikers and cyclists. Story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8165471....

And this article is at last some recognition that we have been taking too much crap and paying through the nose as motorists: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8165606.stm

I say drop road tax and toll roads, and do the whole thing on fuel duty. That way, the less you drive, the less you pay. And in addition, the more fuel efficient you are, the less you pay. Simples!

Why do we pay road tax based on CO2 emissions? It makes no sense. My car is a 1.2 and gets used quite rarely, and yet I pay more road tax than a Ford Focus driver who does 25,000 miles a year! How is that right?

Two topics in one? should get intresting.

As someone who uses london roads the phasing out of bender buses is great news. Routemasters were designed for londons cramped streets and unless you're gonna spend big $$$ rebuilding the routes you want benders on they're ridiculous. I think krazy ken had some "urban hip" vision when he pi55ed our money away on them that mattered more to him than common sense.

As a taxpayer I'm still pretty pi55ed off at the wastage though, unless I get to personally drive one up ken looniestones ass.

1. As I understand it Doris has commissioned a batch of all new "Routemasters" to rid the capital of Ken's dream.

My own vision would see the tracks re-laid and a tram system put back in. I didn't like the idea of trams a few years back, then I went to Amsterdam.
The trams make more sense because they would help do away with the endless queues of red boxes belching out fumes. I'm sure the do-gooders would complain that people will get run over by the trams, well duh! don't walk out in front of them!

2. The "idea" behind road tax in more recent years was to ensure that your vehicle was MoT'd and insured. Now we have the on-line MoT system, and the insurers database, it is redundant and only used as a sop to the green with envy brigade who think that it should be used as a tax on people who like/need larger vehicles. Yes, time to do away with it and put 1p, yes 1p only, on fuel duty. And while you're at it you badger haired buffoon, spend some of the duty raised on our road infrastructure. Oi, Darling, yes you! Pay attention!

1p? I think more like 8p but it will never happen. I remember people talking about this as far back as the late 70s & think they have already put it on fuel, & guess what? We still have road tax & soon we're going to have toll roads. Such an easy form of revenue will never be dropped & more easy forms will be invented & added over the years to come.

Bendy buses going - couldn't care less to be honest.

Scrapping RFL and putting the equivalent on the price of fuel is fair (loads of people are going to have more than one car/CO2 emissions are unfair). But who said life was fair?? The Government will take money wherever they can, and road tax is a cushy little number.

Oh, and there's the small matter of the DVLA redundancies too...

The problem with trams is that they can't drive round a detour or road works or a broken down vehicle. In London we have terrible roads which have historically not been laid properly so need near constant repair (not to mention the utilities beow) and London is about 10x the size of Amsterdam.
